Cabinetry

I'm about to start installing cabinetry on Brunhilde. Yes, pix will follow. I've decided not to go with pre-assembled cabinets and disassembled cabinets just cannot be found. SO, I'm going with 2x2s for framing and 1/4 BC ply and Kreg jigs and make them big enough for double milk crates (wonder where I'll get them ) and the microwave and trash can and .

This will help greatly, because, even with the back door, getting completed cabinets inside would be a struggle.

I looked into preassembled Home Depot cabinets, and the base line ones were kinda of flimsy. I ended up going with disassembled cabinets from Ikea. Cost a little less than HD, and they are easy to assemble.

You can't get much more disassembled than 2x2s and plywood. Screws, saws and drills, I can handle. Insert Tab A into Slot B -- NO!

Watch craigslist for people doing remodels Plus there's places that go in & remove cabinets & appliances from homes that are going to be remodels or leveled, Look for whole house recyclers.

Here is a example from a email list I'm on that I got 3 days ago, $400.00 for all the cabinets you see in the pic.

Watch Craigslist? NOT ONLY NO, but... I also won't go to Habitat For Humanity store. They want premium prices for used material.

Build them. It is super easy. Make a plywood box using a kregg jig then make a wooden face. Easy as pie. All you need is a steady hand a circular saw, a craig jig , screws, glue, plywood, and face lumber (boards poplar, maple, oak, or evwn pine).message me if you need more info.

Kreg Jig question...

Anybody found screws that work? Besides their proprietary screws!

As far as the screw itself goes, any pan head or round washer head wood screw (or particleboard screw) in the correct length will do the trick....#8 or #9 head. (check that the countersink is a large enough diameter, since a round washer head screw is slightly larger in diameter than a pocket head screw).

The important thing in pocket-screw joinery is using a good wood glue.....that's where the strength lies. When you try to break a good glue bond, the wood itself will split, or the particleboard core or plywood plies will separate, before the glue separates from itself.

Local hardware store has them don't know brand name. Do a search fo "pocket hole screw" I have also had good luck using regular construction screws with a small washer. Like this Review: Kreg Pocket Hole Screws Alternatives - by steliart @ LumberJocks.com ~ woodworking community

This is exactly what I have in mind. Plus, it'll be custom fit.

Also run a test piece to ensure the screws depth is correct. I run the drill a little shallower to ensure the screw doesnt over penetrate.

Here's my two cents worth I built 2 x 4 and plywood cabinets and then I did some work(tire and brake work) for a cabinet maker and he said let's trade and I said that's great and he said, after he was done, next time you build a bus let me put the cabinets in from scratch it would have been a lot less frustrating for him. It still worked out really good but he said he could do an awesome custom build for a very reasonable price.

Also you don't need framing lumber like 2x2 or 2x4. Just use thicker ply wood.

This^^^

Go look at your cabinets- no framing in there. Use the 3/4 ply for the sides. Trick is rabbit a grove for the 1/2" floor in the sides. Drill the sides for adjustable shelves and drawer slides before assemble.
