ChurchBuz hatch update.
Been off the forum, but not off the project. Posting pics.
Not sure how often I will be back online. Trying to favor the work time over the internet time.
This first group is cutting the hole and lipping the edge.

Lift hatch
Obviously this stuff is not for the novice if done out of steel, but could ALL be done out of wood. Whether you can drive up on it or not, I will leave that up to you.

Inside Lip
This is the geometry that stiffens the opening and provides a stop/ gasket surface

Still not done, but getting closer.
Goal is to get it sealed up so that I can put a heater inside and work inside in and keep the dark and cold out.

That looks well engineered, very clean, and nicely executed! Thanks for sharing the pics.

I really wanted to do hidden hinges. But I was running out of vacation, daylight savings time, and warm weather. After a couple (cardboard) attempts at putting the hinge inside…
…I realized that it just wasn’t worth it.
I felt kind of cheap making them on the outside, but so far, people seem to like them.

By notching the plate, I was able to hit both flanges of the rib (with sheet metal screws).
I put Teroson down as a sealer and adhesive. I also put it in the holes before putting the sheet metal screws in.

When building hinges, it is super helpful to align them with a single rod.
I did this on both sides, being careful that welding did not pull things in to a bind.
Tacked things together, checked the rod to make sure it turned, welded a little more, checked the rod…
Stayed plenty free! Rod slid in and out just fine.

That is some fantastic metal fab work! The design, fit and finish are A+.
Could you please post a link to the door seal you used it looks like that size and style would work well for sealing my underbody storage.
Thanks
Ted

Lip
I broke the stainless by clamping it to a table, and hitting it with a hammer lol. And looks ok.
I did use VHB Tape to stick it on before riveting.
Used clamps to set the tape.
Drilled holes before taking the protective film off.
