I'd LOVE to have one too, man. Those were great vans and I'm not even a Ford guy.

Why is it your dream van? Like I said I'm selling mine at some point. It's a 1990 with I don't know how many miles but it loves doing 75 on the freeway. It's a 5.8 v8 that I think I put 15 thousand miles on in 6 years. Probably less.

I loved the body style.. was my favorite, when I started our new HVAC service division in 1994, the fleet director thought he would be sarcastic and give me the oldest van they had which was a 1988 extended length (the one that looked like it was added on to) ford cargo can with a 460 in it..

it was a Joke.. they had actually ordered me a brand new Van but didnt tell me..

I LOVED that old van.. it was a trooper.. had wickedly cold air-conditioning and power for days.. no cruise, manual windows and locks.. and a super cushy Cloth seat

needless to say someone else got the brand new van... I didnt like the dashboard, the engine, the seat, the radio or any of it.. I took it home one weekend to move my tools over to it.. didnt move my tools just drove it back to our shop , tossed the keys on manager's desk and said "i think gary wants a new van"...

they had to pry that old 88 out of my hands when it got old enough they had a strict policy of retirement... 10 years..

Strongly agree with this. I've had years of experience driving post EPA Bluebird A3FEs with the 6.7 Cummins and they are very good for what they are. THe ones with only EGR (before 2013) are decently reliable. I only had one EGR related breakdown in 5 years with one of our older 2011 buses.

Compare that with the post 2013s where I get DEF related issues multiple times a year.

Deleting EGR only engines isn't as terrible as some people think. And once that job is done the 6.7 is just as good as a pre emissions 5.9. The hard part is dealing with the ECM thinking its not there and shutting down the motor. Dodge pickup guys have had ways to cheat this for a long time now but the ones in school buses use entirely different ECMs/electrical systems.

Also asking transmission type will be pointless with these buses as they are all 2000 or 3060 series Allison both of which are excellent on the highway.

I can delete the Navistar ECMs and I think the "software" exists to delete the 6.7 medium duty... most shops wont do it anymore as the EPA was cracking down on them.. so now people are just passing around the hacked software and sending each other their ECMs and interfaces.. something where many more are getting deleted than before as people figure out how easy it is to do..

I know people on this forum like to think I do some kind of magic Voodoo when i reprogram their computers on their busses.. but really other than when I dig deep into protocols for inter-module comms and such its really easy to repgoram an engine..

We took a couple of days off because life happens. But today we got the final cleaning and interior prep work done!! It looks clean in the pictures, but it was pretty nasty once we started wiping. It cleaned up fantastic though! Next step some paint on any interior metal that won’t be covered (like the front header) and some simple wiring for some lights and outlets. We’re gonna try the Rustoleum farm equipment paint in International Harvester red. The name dragon wagon comes from a firetruck my husband drove back in the day......so red is a no brainer.

Speaking of EGR deletes - I drove an '04 Volvo with the ISX Cummins engine, which had an appetite for eating turbo's, Like, one a year. Apparently, according to the shop we used, it had something to do with the EGR system as it ages, valves not actuating fully and basically suggesting an EGR delete. That was done and though the check engine light was on ever since, it never had any turbo issues after that.

The EGR delete was never mentioned openly because of course it's not legal, but careful wording of questions and reading between the lines, we both knew what was done and nothing was said afterward.

We finally finished all of the cleaning and taping off. Today we got the first coat of paint on all of the interior that won’t be covered. After much research on DIY auto paint we settled on Rustoleum Farm Equipment paint in International Harvester Red. It seemed a good choice for ease, durability and budget. 4.5 hrs with both of us painting. We’ll do a second coat tomorrow.
