Next, we started to remove some of the rubber mat and subfloor to see what shape the base metal was in. I was excited to see no rust. I realized that the floor is aluminum so it was in great shape.

My friend came over to get rid of the “no child left behind” alarm and the rear door alarms. He just unplugged one harness and checked the rear door switches with a multimeter and cut them off. And the bus still starts😊

Then, we got on a roll and removed the rest of the subfloor (3/8” plywood), put metal tape on holes and put in a new subfloor (15/32” plywood). I put 30# roofing felt down under the plywood. My son tried out his red Ryder BB gun. My oldest daughter made a surprise trip home from college and my dad came over to give some welcome advice and help.

It's unreal looking at a bus floor that immaculate.

Nice progress and more important family involvement.

Our E350 Thomas has a ribbed aluminum floor as well. I think the best think since it vents below the plywood.

Right! After I showed my wife the picture she said she had floor envy. She did the bulk of the floor rust removal on our bus.

If you ever have to abandon the build for any reason Freebo, I would appreciate "First Dibs" on it before you advertise it! Simply PM me and we're on...
Thank you.

Thanks. I’m enjoying the process. I have needed a project for a while now and this has fit the bill. I’m learning quite a bit.

More wood on the sub floor

Wifey and I today. Sanding and painting. I was going to put down a peel and stick vinyl but changed course and ordered some lifeproof vinyl from Home Depot.

I was going to put down a peel and stick vinyl floor but had a change in plan. The aluminum floor has quite a bit of flex even after putting down the plywood so I went with lifeproof rigid core VPF from Home Depot. I love it. Also my daughter and I made a couple of penny wall panels for the stair risers. They came out great. I won’t have time to work on the bus for a while now so this was a welcome milestone.

Onward

I have been working on the bus in my spare time. I wish I had more of it. I found a mattress on Facebook marketplace and started to frame out a base. Then I realized I got ahead of myself and temporarily removed it. This is because I needed access to the rear light wiring to get a hitch put on. That’s all for now.
