I also believe that if those 530 overheat, there are plastic parts INSIDE the engine that will render it useless. I have never heard good things about this engine.
Just what I have heard, not from experience.

the 530 has plastics like the VT-365? ughhh when will they learn..

It was the later 530s that were labeled maxforce

That's not anything to compare to the dismal failure that it the VT-365/PS6.0

I just wouldve thought IHC had learned by then that plastics and hot metal / oil dont mix.. granted its driver errror to run the temp off the scale, however crap happens and most every other engine manufacturer can handle having the temp run off the scale a time or two.. with at the most a blown head gasket.. not a scrap-yard heap.. which is what happened to ever yover-heated VT-365 / 6.0

I talked to someone recently who ran a 444E off the scale.. well till the alarm was blaring which on most is 240 degrees.. and it lived just fine out of the ordeal..

I didn't know there was an engine bigger than the 8.3L. 530 with an MD3060 overdrive would be VERY nice. With the 8.3L and the AT643 I can't keep up with an MD3060 bus.

I think the 530 was IHC answer to the electronic 8.3, im interested to know the TQ / HP ratings.. cummins typically came in a bit better in the torque numbers than IHC did.. which is where thew real magic happens.. lower RPM.. and one reason a 643 cant keep up with a 3060 (and of course overdrive)

On the way home I had the cruise control set at 70 and it just purred right along.

So I can pull tree stumps but can't drag race. Well, tree stumps as long as I'm not on dirt/grass else I can't pull myself.

I'm going to have to add you to the $hit list for that. 65 is 2500 rpm and I don't go above that. I think 2900 is the max recommended.

Anyone know if a '98 BB has a rev limiter? I'd hate to find out the hard way that it doesn't.

Attached is a picture of the dash with the cruise control set at 68 miles per hour running at 1900 RPMs.

Now you're just being an over achiever and trying to climb higher on the list; good job, it worked.

I want productive on level ground and enough of a ceiling to go up the hill at the same speed. At least the same gear.

The TDI is almost as bad when driven at 50~55mph. Any hill kills it. At 70+, I can run up a hill without downshifting if I keep my foot in it. At the 50~55, I end up downshifting 2 gears and floored. The bus just doesn't hit the 70 within the 2500 rpm. If I'm running the bus at 65 it does better on the hills than running at 55.

I really need to find the official BB max rpm and mark the tach so I don't forget.
