its really interesting just exactly what a roof raise does to a bus...
I had seen them all over, i own 2 non-raised busses.. one is a 'high top' and one is a regular height.. I always had thought previous that roof raises were kind of silly ..
Until I actually experienced it.. having been inside Roll your own previously, and then being inside it as we actually turned the screws to raise it up, was definitely an eye opening experience...
I liken it really as the difference is dramatic enough to say that it goes from feeling like you are in a vehicle to feeling like you are in a House!..

You're absolutely right. I'd have to say that by doing the raise, he added 100+ sq feet...and to be able to look up and have to raise your arms to get something is a huge bonus. It makes a world of difference.

Roof raising isn't for EVERYONE, but its way easier than most folks think. There are so many ways to do it, too.
I might have talked myself out of it- but having one inch over my head was simply uncomfortable and all my windows were shot. Add in the extensive tar removal and gutting and we were already 75% done with the work to raise the roof!
We got a pretty cool time lapse of the raise I'll post once my friend emails it to me.
I could have raised it a good bit more, but after about 8 inches it really felt like "enough". So we went two more.
I thought it would be cool to see what a "lower" raise would look like, since most folks seem to go 16-24" up when they raise theirs.
If I ever do another BIG bus build, I'd go with a high headroom model and raise it an additional 6-8".
A little bit of raise goes a long way!

How is it to insure a bus once the roof is raised? I've heard most companies wont touch it, any truth in that?

WHy would I go out of my way to report it to them?
Once its done they'll never know- it'll look more or less factory.
Its a BUS not an RV, so they've never asked for pics or came out to look at it. They just want my money, that's all. The only question they really ask is "have you altered the suspension in any way at all?" No reason to mess with that so no problem there.
When it comes to my roof-
What they don't know certainly won't hurt em.

That is a smooth transition section. It looks great, and it would appear that you did well with the welding. Are you planning to continue welding as you put up the sides, or will you switch to rivets?

THANKS, yeah its pretty smooth! Will be even better once I do some bodywork.
Yeah it'll be rivets from here on out, other than a few things we'll be welding up. The sides will all be riveted. Stainless, closed end blind rivets! BLING!

Yeah, I've been mowing all week, and did a brake job for a buddy.
Next RYO update will likely be this weekend. Nothing exciting, just gonna go NUTS with a gallon or two of Ospho, and start getting ready to skin it in.
Going to look at some windows a buddy has for sale. He sells teardrop trailers and has a ton of parts and windows.

What kind of welder are you running eccb? Does it have enough juice to penetrate when welding the ribs?

Sure it does. Its a hobart Handler 140... Lil Fokker did amazing. A welder is nothing to cheap out on!

WOOOOOORRDDDDD... i was looking at that unit recently, thats about the most power you can get out of a standard household outlet and it beats the heck out of similar miller or lincoln machines.
