I suspect they'll be back. The massive ant hill that was underneath the piece of plywood I'd laid down behind my bus has already poked back through. A few days ago I actually spotted a line of ants up the side of my bus (to something dead on the roof, I suspect); they had gone up one of the stinging nettles which was leaning against the side.

Sometimes, I do find it good to move on for a while on the tedious jobs like the underside of the bus. Mind you, I've not begun on our bus underside!

I sure hate to see all that purdy yellow go--but I guess that's progress!

I needed to shave the underside of the board to fit over the bits of angle steel around the edges (which are 3/16" thick). My orbital sander did the trick well enough.

The piece was easier to place than I thought. Crawled all over it pressing it down onto the screws and bolts.

I thought it might be kind of difficult to see where the puncture marks were, but they were plain as day.

Drilled out all the holes and routed out the impressions left by the bolt heads. The biggest time consumer here is that I have to take a screwdriver and push the little plug of foam board out of the hole bit each time. Without that problem these holes wouldn't take 30 seconds to drill.

Still have to do nine dowels over the fuel tank bolts and five over the rear reinforcement bolts. I think that makes 43 dowels total for this one piece. I spaced these things way too close together, could have saved myself a lot of work.

Started with the old tool since the nut is really well attached. I did Mark I with flux core which was great for welding in the nut on the inside but not so great for those little nail ends.

Doing all four points this time to get better grip on the dowel.

I ground out two ledges where I can get a wide screwdriver under and pop the tool off. I had a lot of trouble getting the older version off.

Ledges work well, nut comes off the dowel easily.

Ugh, not this time. The thing was in terrible shape, missing parts, and just enormous. Had to just leave it there.

I'm expanding my product horizons ... to Dynatron-552. Basically paintable Dynatron in a can. Going to use this to seal up my window sills.

This is one of the dowels that goes down over the 3/8 bolts sticking up from the floor reinforcement. Wasn't sure these would really work, but they stick down on the bolts nice and snug. I was unsure about whether or not to put dowels on these bolts, but it will help shore up the floor where I'll have my fresh water tank and also where I might be storing a scooter, so it's good to have more than just the XPS holding things up.

It is so refreshing to see someone dedicated to their design philosophy.

I am glad Mark II works better.

Thanks! But, heh, I might be slightly less dedicated to this design philosophy after running 80 of these dowels over the last two days. I am definitely going to use fewer of these for the front floor section.

Mark II is already dying. I think the issue is that those nails I used are just too soft and bend too easily, even just those little tips. It might last me for the rest of the floor, fingers crossed. Mark III will use thicker nails and shorter points, I think.

ever since you started painting...when I see your posts I an reminded of an article that I read, probably 40 years ago about a gut who would come home every day and paint a small wooden cube with latex paint to relieve stress. After a few years the cube wasn't so little any more but he kept painting because he felt less stressed afterwards.

So.. is the bus making stress or relieving stress?

Well, the bus relieves stress by making more stress.

Yikes. I just spend 5 minutes fiddling around with my old circular saw to change the blade, and then noticed it was still plugged in.
