UTAH SKOOLIE seat belt laws

So everyone is going to say "check your state laws" but I cant find anything regarding a conversion or rv laws regarding seat belts or driver area being segregated by a wall. My theory is its better to beg forgiveness than ask permission. I'm worried what kind of can of worms im going to open if I ask my insurance company if I need seat belts or not. Any one with experience here or a link would be muck appreciated.

Re: UTAH SKOOLIE seat belt laws

Tagged as an RV...
Typically you need seat belts only for the driver and side passenger seat if the seat is up front like in a car. The other seating areas do not get considered. Many folks prefer to add seat belts to keep the kids strapped in. If you are tagging as an RV, then you need to look at the RV exemptions (usually buried in the rules).

You may want to go to an RV forum and ask about Utah seat belt laws FOR RV's.

Re: UTAH SKOOLIE seat belt laws

Insurance companies don't make the seat belt laws.. each individual state does. For example, here in oregon, cars after about 1970 or so have to have seat belts.. (One reason i have some cars older than that..) But mostly, if the vehicle had a seat belt (like a newer bus with a drivers seat belt) then the seat has to have a belt. They are not mandated to be retrofitted here..

Re: UTAH SKOOLIE seat belt laws

The dmv ladies around here tell you that all cars have to have seat belts.. but that is untrue as only yom regs are necessary. Your state motor vehicle code will tell you the particulars... not necesarily the dmv or the police who are mostly kids... I had one stater tell me i had to have seat belts in my 49 chevy and i told him to call the office and check the code....guess who lost...

Re: UTAH SKOOLIE seat belt laws

I'm new at this and besides, I live in Georgia, so don't know anything about Utah law, but have given thought to seat belts for my project. What I've decided to do is use two suburban third row benches with built in seatbelts for the seats at the table, this way my family can be strapped while we're rolling. After walking away from a couple of wrecks that should have been the end for me, I'm a firm believer in seatbelt use.

I can't think of a good reason to not instal seat belts if you can. It's kind of like when your on an airplane, you wear it when your seated but you can unbuckle it and move around if you choose.

I plan on doing the same... I would like the kids to face forward with belts while moving and be able to swivel sideways when setting up camp...

Re: UTAH SKOOLIE seat belt laws

We checked with the California Highway Partol and after about 20 minutes they called me back and said they would go with what ever the state rules were for a bus/ rv in the state the bus was registered in. I figure California would be the most strict. We have drove our bus from North Carolina to Cailfornia and never had any hassles. We had close to twenty people going to northern Idaho and the police looked at us but never pulled us over.
