Photobucket images - not for forum use

Recently the image hosting service Photobucket changed their terms of use for account holders and no longer allow embedded images to be displayed on forums. As a result the forum had many threads lose their photo documentation.

Moving forward we will disallow links to Photobucket and ask that you store your images with the posted text that they were intended to augment, here on the forum.

Forum members can store images posts and threads using the attachment option found in the advanced reply editor or in photo albums set up in individual profiles. There is no cost to store images here and this will ensure that your content is not diminished by an image hosting service changing their minds about how your content is handled. Thanks for understanding.

Can I continue to use Imgur? I really like it, its free, easy to use and if they ever screw me over I'll just move on.

Yes, you can but remember that if the images are ever removed from their server (or held ransom in return for new subscriber fees) they will no longer display here.

No problemo. I wouldn't blame this site for the misdeeds of another site. I can't believe folks were mad at you admins over what photobucket decided to do!
THanks!

Thanks Janet and I sure hope none of us sounded like we were blaming Skoolie.net for pb's action!

Would it be possible to post a tutorial for those of us like me who can barely turn on a computer--let alone figure out pic posting?

I'm game to try it on my own but I'd sure hate to crash the whole site in the attempt!

Hi Janet,

Kind of continuing from Christopher's note... Saying that PhotoBucket "no longer allow embedded images to be displayed on forums" is not accurate. It is only true of the FREE PB accounts (and I think it is actually a bit more complicated than that...). So, it is still a viable image hosting service (whether one agree's with their fee is another matter).

Kind of reading between the lines of your post - it hints that ONLY images stored here on Skoolie.net will be allowed/displayed. I hope that is not the case as many of us have our own image hosting and, either because of property rights or simply added effort, will not change our approach.

Regardless of all that, thanks for your efforts and the great resource that Skoolie.net has become!

A simple case of extortion by the good folks at PB (Puke Bucket). Reminds me of the drug dealers who work school grounds...

"Hey kid...try this...it's free".

Then once they are hooked...the price goes through the roof.

Janet,
Will we be able to go back through and edit post in order to fix the dead images/links?

Links to other image hosting will still be a viable option as well as links to images hosted here at skoolie in the albums section. When the dust settles on this we will look at edits on existing images; but please be a little patient as this is new territory for us.

In the meantime; limits on image attachment sizes for forum posts are being raised.

Thank you for being a wonderful Admin, Janet!

I started just uploading straight from my iPhone through TapaTalk... it's like uploading to facebook, easy.

I see all my pictures are now showing in my old posts but I received an email from photobucket telling me to upgrade so I assume the links will be cut again at some point.

To get ready for that I downloaded all my forum pics and marked them with the post number and position in the post so I can add them back if editing is allowed later on.

Photobucket sucks.

I don't *think* I have any Photobucket links on this forum. Most of my photos (here, at least) should be hosted on other platforms.

I feel the pain, heck the whole internet has been burned by PB, this does go to show that all it takes is 1 flick of a switch and the whole shebang is gone *poof*

well its the progression of storage.. many years ago forums told you *NOT* to place images on their servers and to use whatever 3rd party hosting you wanted.. back when cable internet first came along alot of people hosted picso n their own servers.. and of course those links broke.. so then came along the likes of photobucket, imgur, and many others..

now storage is cheap.. virtual hosting can get you many gigs for not mich $$ per month.. or if you maintain your own forum servers in a colo somewhere you can drop a couple terrabytes of RAID in for not much $$ these days..

now that PB renigged back on the nazi-ism for a bit, someone needs to go and write a program that will crawl every thread and pull the images down and host them here..

i could probably build the program if I had direct access to the Database back-end that this BB runs on...

It could be worse...
At this time, they're only limiting 3rd party linking(the pics are still on their servers). But, if they really wanted to stir up a hornet's nest... They could have just denied their users all access to their pictures! Or closed shop and said tough boobies! Then turned around the next day and use all their equipment for paid subscribers.
