Website Upgrades
I am starting to roll out new features for the website, look for changes and new looks to the website throughout the week.
First update: is the new forum. Not only does it look much different but now you can attach files directly into your post, no need to upload them somewhere else first.

Re: Website Upgrades
Cool new look. When first looking at the page loading up, I had to make sure I was on the correct site. Great job you are doing!! Keep up the great work.
Thanks.

Re: Website Upgrades
I've been having trouble using the back door in to the old forum format lately, is it related to this new deal? Is that door ultimately going to close?
I'm temporarily on borrowed DSL and it actually took close to a minute before I could even select the forum option from the new home page.
I am viewing and posting on the brand spankin' new format, but my browser does not seem to like it much. It has thrown me out once, and with every screen change, it looks like a website full of gobblety-gook for a few seconds before the page comes through legibly.
PLEASE don't get me wrong, I DO like the new look and feel! I just don't want to give up my browser & security, so I'm hoping there are options, but if that's what it's gonna take to get my skoolie fix, I'll work around it somehow!
For what it's worth, I'm using Opera v9.21 browser behind Proxomitron, and the old (back door) format through this combo has never given me any trouble.
Thanks again for providing such a great playground!

Re: Website Upgrades
No issues any any build of Firefox or IE I've used thus far.
I really like the new look although it threw me for a loop when someone locked the back door. No biggie to me, but that might hurt if someone is a little short on bandwidth.
Now I just need to learn how to use all the cool new features. Looks good, Steve. Let us know what we can do to help.

It will no longer work under this new forum. However I am planing on changing the main page due to all the complaints about using flash.

All websites that use css will do this. They do not know how to format the page until your browser loads the style sheet, there is nothing wrong with what you are running on your end.

Re: Website Upgrades
If you prefer to view the forum the with old style you can click this link:
http://www.skoolie.net/forum/ucp.php
Then go to the Board Preferences tab and select subsilver2 as your board style.

Re: Website Upgrades
Just going to http://www.skoolie.net/forum seems to work just fine for me as a "new" backdoor. I don't have an issue with the flash elements on the homepage. Heck, I think it makes things look more professional to a new user. I just like to get right down to the meat and potatoes of it all.

Re: Website Upgrades
OK, I am now entering via the "new back door" - http://www.skoolie.net/forum. I have changed my board preferences style to subsilver2. Now, once I get past the login load, things work a bit faster. I can easily live with the current "new" method, therefore I am putting away the key to the "old back door"! (Note: I said putting away, not throwing away , but if ya wanna permanently bar that old door, I am content to use the new one!)
Thanks for all your hard work on this site, Steve, I hope I didn't sound too critical of the new board look & feel! I really do like it, and even more so now that your tips have helped return some of the speed!
Ditto your whole post, Experience, I'm a meat & potatoes guy, too! Bells and whistles are great. . .when I'm riding a train!

Re: Website Upgrades
I wouldn't know much about flash problems, I got tired of the Flash PU ad's so I removed flash from my system.... I get an occasional "Sandbox Error" when flash tries to play...
New appearance for the site looks good!!

Re: Website Upgrades
If flash is a problem and you use Mozilla Firefox there is a plug in called FlashBlock (I think...a search would find it easily enough) that I use that blocks all flash elements and just puts a play button in their place. If I go to YouTube it means one extra mousestroke to view a video, but it sure does prevent hijacking and obnoxiously loud websites from destroying my peace.

Re: Website Upgrades
I like the new look. You are probably already aware of this but the search feature isn't working yet.
For example, type in an extremely common keyword such as "engine" and this is the result:
"No posts were found because the word engine is not contained in any post."

I'm with ya here, regarding change for change's sake. However, there are some features that I've been wanting to see that come with this new package (Well, RSS primarily) If it works as advertised, I can see new articles at a glance on my iGoogle page without having to pop in here.

Re: Website Upgrades
I've noticed that ever since I started using the new format that every time I login, every post that was a new post at the time I first logged in, is shown as a new post. If I view them or mark them as read, they de-highlight, but the next time I login, every post from May 28, 2007 and newer is shown as a new post again.
The only way to just see the new posts SINCE my last login is to select the "View new posts" option, so I guess I'll use that, but even then they revert to "new posts" at next login.

Griff click on the link at the bottom of the page that says Delete all board cookies, or click here and see if that helps.

Re: Website Upgrades
Thanks alot for trying Steve! Neither of those options worked, they just logged me out, and when I logged back in it was just as described in my previous post. I even closed Opera down to ensure my cache was cleared. I have Opera set to clear the cache and delete all cookies on exit (which it does quite faithfully).
Please don't waste any more time on it on my account, I can still use the "View new posts" option which does work as advertised. None of these issues are gonna keep this schoolie junkie from gettin' his daily fix!
Also, since nobody else seems to be experiencing this problem, I have to assume my something about my PC is at fault. Goodness knows what Windows XP Pro is doing behind the curtain.

Re: Website Upgrades
I do have to say that the ability to post pictures without having them hosted elsewhere is HUGE. No more will we have to struggle with getting the picture to show or teaching the new guy (I was that guy at one point) how to do it. For those of you that haven't tried the new integrated picture hosting, give it a shot.
