Actually, if nothing works at all it's generally easier to troubleshoot than if some things work erratically sometimes. There are a few common wires, ignition (on with key), battery (always on), lights, ground and various senders/sensors for individual gauges. Most common gauges use an ignition source and a variable resistance to ground through the sending unit. Get a test light at the auto parts store and poke around. Double check your fuses and get a few spares. Post pictures when you can.
