1981 International Wayne: yea or run like hell??

Hello!
What do you folks think of an 1981 International Wayne, DT466? I was told to use caution because Wayne is out of business and hard to find parts. What do you guys think of this?
Thanks!

Any links to pics? Who made the chassis? I presume International?

Just asking....

the Waynes look like good cheap old buses, but look into the 90-95 AmTran buses they're selling too.

For your purposes maybe you should be looking for a bookmobile.

If you're thinking an '81 would be a more solid and simple vehicle because it's older, consider that all its rubber engine and drive train seals are also old. Just like in old cars those things have to be replaced because old rubber splits and cracks, and that usually happens when a bus starts being used again after sitting for long periods of time.

Think used car. If you can get a newer one for the same price as the older one, you may be saving yourself a lot of headaches because old rigs need more maintenance.

I was told the waynes also (even though they look tall).. also have low headroom compared to other busses.. if you are going t oconvert thats something to think about....

waynes are also hard to get body parts for it seems..

The Wayne body buses were good buses. They were equivalent in quality and materials to a Blue Bird, Ward, or Carpenter bus of the same vintage.

For your purposes don't be concerned about the fact Wayne is no longer in business. Wayne used off the shelf parts from various OEM vendors to provide the parts they used. Off the top of my head I can't think of any part that was made exclusively for Wayne.

I noticed at least one of the Wayne body buses already had the seats removed. That is a big headache and labor intensive job you would not have to do yourself.

Since you are not interested in raising the roof I would go inside all of the buses that are in this auction to find the ones with the highest factory roof.

IIRC, the Wayne body buses had higher standard interior headroom than Blue Bird and Thomas but not as high as the optional headroom offered by BB and Thomas.

The chassis by IHC is going to be bone stock out of the box International medium duty truck. All of the parts and pieces to keep it running are available from NAPA, CARQUEST, or either a Navistar truck or IC Bus dealer.

If you have a choice, go with air brakes instead of hydraulic. In most cases air brakes have more braking surface and have a much better emergency/parking brake than the hydraulically braked buses.

I would not spend much more than $2K on any of these buses. Anything more than $2K would depend upon nearly new tires, rebuilt engine and/or transmission, or already painted a non-school bus yellow color.

Nothing wrong with the Waynes. Good old buses.
I'd rather have a ten year old car than my brand new one that burns a quart of oil every 1500 miles or so.
Newer just means more emissions crap and electric junk to break.

exactly why I bouhgt a bus that has a completely mechanical drivetrain.. I(or the old school diesel mechanic down the street) have a lot better chance at fixing anything wrong than with one of the newer ones... (ie VT365, DT-466E)...

The DT "E" would be one of the few I'd consider of the newer electronic ones, only because its EVERYWHERE and lots of places can fix it.

DT-444E seems to be the one that fleet managers "like" the best.. at least if talking between the DT-466E and DT-444E.

if you can find a bus that has had the injector and EGR updates applied to it then most of the 'E' are good... even the "dreaded VT365" isnt bad if its been updated... but I feel the reason there are so many seemingly later model low mileage IC Busses out there is that fleet managers are dumping them instead of putting the 1000s into updating them.. (that and IC's do tend to rust rather quickly in northern climates)..

IDK why anyone would prefer the 444 vs the 466.
VT365 DOES suck!
