---------------------------------

Going to look at this one this evening, looks like I may drive it home. The fellow who owns it says he works for the School District where he purchased it. He went on to say that the fellows who drove it said that it was in great shape, a good runner and averaged about 9 miles to the gallon. Trans is a 643 Allison. 478 rear-end ratio and factory equipped storage bins underneath on both sides. Tilt front end and dual battery setup. Air-brakes. No factory air-conditioning.

Re: 1990 International-conventional 466/643 combo, air brakes.

By now you probably have an answer as to whether or not you're going to buy it, but keep us updated. It sounds like a decent rig. Just make sure you get it out on the open highway if he is willing. 4.78's with an MT643 will probably perform an awful lot like my 4.56's with the AT545 and that means that 65 mph is really pushing it.

Good Luck!

From what I see it looks like a bargin. Just inspect it fully and take it out on the highway for a spin. It does look like a carpenter body but even if it is I wouldn't worry about that they are still safer than any stick and staple rv out there.

Re: 1990 International-conventional 466/643 combo, air brakes.

Well it's 1:00 am here and I just drove my new bus in! Its about three hours up over the pass at Government Camp. Everything went as usual for me. The first time in my life I ever drove a bus it was up over MT. Hood at night and in the rain. A couple of times I could hardly see but after I made it over the top the skies cleared I began to enjoy the drive.

Three hours back to my house. The bus ran like a top. I was really surprised to find that running that diesel engine felt familiar, similar to the way a V-twin Harley Davidson performs, within their respective power bands of course. The thing has a sweet spot at 2300-2400 rpm, it just hums along without strain right at 60mph. Almost like it runs itself. 2500-2600 rpm it cruises at 65mph and I went up a couple of slight grades at 65mph no problem. But I could tell the motor was working a bit. Climbing 6% grades was about 40-45 mph. The fellow I purchased the bus from said that it still has a governor installed from the school district.

I had to (almost) lock up the brakes about 25 miles from the house. While coming thru town at 45 mph on the Bypass a traffic signal quickly turned yellow then red. I didn't lock em up but I sure did appreciate the air-brakes. Their stopping power is beyond what I would have gotten from hydraulics. I did think I heard a little bit of grinding or sticking from the left front though, I will have to take a look at it tomorrow. I also noticed in the rain the left front did seem to pull slightly when wet.

Final tally, the guy let me drive the 72 passenger, Carpenter Body, (welds inspected and repaired per regulations) away for $1200.00.

Congrats! That's one HECKUVA deal! All it takes is a little patience and persistence to find the right bus out there!
