1999 Gillig transit

Bus spent first 18 years of service in Minnesota, last two in Denver. Described as having a Detroit 40 engine and an Allison MD3060 or 2500 transmission, guy wasn't sure which. They both are intended to lockup at hwy speeds. Good as far as it goes. Said to be sold because they have outgrown it. It's a 35ft bus.

Age: and stop/go service as a short haul people/luggage mover. Hard on the whole thing, right?

Years: many winters in a high salt situation.

Is this even worth looking further at at $3200 and sold strictly as is?

I just bought a 2001 Gillig 35' Low Floor on Friday. Not sure if the one you're looking at is a Low Floor Advantage or a Phantom. Anyway, they seem to becoming available recently. Mine has 463,000 miles on it and I just drove it 700 miles without issue. With new tires (mine have no tread left) I would drive it across country in its current condition without hesitation. It has air suspension and floats like a dream down the highway.

Not sure what you want to do with it, but if it is a low floor, you will have no under storage. However, the front has 8' foot ceiling and the rear has 8'6" ceilings. And they are wider than a school-bus and have 8'1" interior with.

Gilligs have a stainless frame and fiberglass body, so rust is not a problem.

This was an online auction, there were 10 Gilligs, the highest sold for around $1600.00. I got mine for $1430.00 which included the buyers premium (10%).

FWIW,

I was looking for a Phantom for a while.
The high miles and low ground clearance keep me away.

Thank you...

...Bacon and Shay.

I suspect the fiberglass and stainless construction make it harder than plain steel to do a roof raise. Anyone agree/not ?

My low floor Gillig has 8 foot ceiling in the front half and 6 foot 8 inches in the rear half. Not sure why one would raise the roof on a low floor. If you were going to raise the floor for underfloor storage and then raise the roof for ceiling clearance, well then you might as well by a bus with under floor storage to begin with.

The Gillig Low Floor is kind of a modular design without a lower frame rail(s), and I believe relies on the whole structure for support, and I would not cut into it.

Just sayin,

Isn't the DD Series 40 the engine based on a DT-466 long block with Detroit's fuel system and accessories?

Well I know enough to rule out this bus. Hoping for a roof raise so that I have enough interior space on a shelf running around the top of the bus to fill that full of totes. Clearly the Gillig is not suitable.
