Re: 88 International.. motor question

Large commercial vehicles are often available with several different engines -- even from different engine manufacturers. So you need to "start at the other end", and ask the seller which engine it has.

Many of us would like to find a bus with a stick shift! Oh, the Allison Automatics are actually pretty good, but there is something about having the full control of a stick shift, and less risk of sudden failure.

Re: 88 International.. motor question

1988.....i think that pre-dates the navistar 6.9 litre. i'm sure someone else knows for sure. you really don't want that motor in a skoolie

the common international motors, which are a logical choice for that vehicle are the DT360 or the DT466...both are excellent motors, the bigger of the two makes more power.

it could have a detroit 8.3? liter v8.....not such a great motor

or could even have theinternational 9.0 liter which is slow and pokey but apparently gets great mileage and is indestrucable accordign to Gregg

if it's gas it could be an international 366

there are probably a few other motors it could be also.......

when you go look at the bus, there will probably be a sticker on teh motor...if not, just look at the engine and you can learn a lot. is it a V motor or an inline? The DT series are inline 6 cylinders and most are painted blue or blueish green.

take a picture of the motor if you can't identify it and i'm sure someone here will tell you what it is

Re: 88 International.. motor question

I thought 88 was the first year the 7.3 was in them to replace the 6.9. I too could be wrong. Even if it is a 7.3 in a 40 foot bus it would be a little slow on take off but it is a bus. I have a 7.3 in mine but it is a shorty and when I hook up my 7000 pound truck behind it it takes off slower but it isn't too bad until I hit the hills going up.

I have drivin 40 foot buses with the dt360 in them and they do better on the hills than a 7.3. The only 6.9's I drove were in ford vans and they seemed to run for ever although they did burn a bit of oil. About 2 to 3 quarts every 500 miles and sometimes more if they pulled a load.

Also most important thing to do is to see what the rear end gears are cause you don't want anything that is geared too low. Mine was 5.57 and I had it changed to 4.33 to help with mpg. I couldn't break much past 55 with 5.57 gears with my foot on the floor 3000rpms. Now I can cruise along at about 60 at 2500 rpms which is a good engine speed for a 7.3 and a 6.9.

Re: 88 International.. motor question

From Wikipedia:

Quote:
The 420 cu in (6.9 L) International Diesel was used by Ford from 1983 through 1987, though it did not use the Power Stroke name. Unlike the larger engines, it used indirect injection.
I'm sure the years they are referring to apply to Ford trucks, not buses. I've heard the 6.9's are a little low on power. I have a Detroit Diesel 8.2L Turbo. So far it's been reliable. Fully loaded (hauling two 4x4's), it's able to haul around about 30,000 lbs at 60 mph (although acceleration is quite slow with that weight). At around 18-19,000 lbs (guesstimate) it has pretty good acceleration. With 30,000 lbs I get around 7.5 mpg. It seems I loose about 1 mpg with every 5,000 lbs I add.

Could the 8.2L bus have a 4 speed automatic and not a 5 speed? I'm not sure what transmissions had 5 speeds but it would probably be better than the typical 4 speed Allison (AT545).
