Alternative parking/emergency brake?

Oh I'm aware it's not a legal park brake... however the bus currently doesn't have a park brake at all.. so something would be better than nothing. Lol.


I'm hoping to get the parking brake assembly though.

Hey, got any suggestions for a AT545 to A2000 swap? The drum driveline brake swapped over nicely but I need a bracket for the parking brake cable to mount on the rear of the transmission. I’m sure the A2000 had this in some cases so the bracket exists somewhere!

Surprised it didn’t come with the trans from the donor vehicle. I made my own bracket. I looked for the gmc bracket used on the 7500/8500 trucks and couldn’t find one. I’ll have to look online again or maybe I can get a vin from one of the for sale uhaul chassis at my storage place. They all have hydraulic 1000 trans

Thanks Chris. I think my donor bus had air brakes which would negate the need for the mechanical emergency brake. Luckily, I was able to get the drum brake on. I just haven’t been able to attach the cable. I may make a bracket, or pay a guy to help. It would be easier to find a bolt on solution though.

Literally a year of searching off and on. Finally found one at a random Allison rebuilder. I had called a half dozen shops that morning and finally found one.

They only had one and they'd had it for a few years. If you can't find anything, I'd consider a hydraulic option and wheel chocks as the transmission mounted units are JUST parking brakes and if applied during an emergency stop would likely just bust the tail housing.

Do you have a part number or anything? Or is it just called parking brake assembly?

You can stop a bus with that brake I know someone who did it as a test before they swapped their trans.. no it wasn’t me although I did do it from 20 mph as a test.. the one who did it from 60 made some good smoke but didn’t bust a U joint or driveshaft or tail shaft.. it’s definitely meant to be just a parking brake and wouldn’t last long as an emergency brake it did work ..

Wheel chocks are definitely not a good option. I seriously wouldn’t trust a line lock either.

Wheel chocks and a driveline brake are necessary well I always chock if I’m not on level ground or back against a curb in that bus

I looked at your swap a little bit, an Allison 1000 or 2000 would be something to think about and the I could still use the parking brake. Do you know anything about swapping one into a 2000 gmc 7.4 454?

I don't have a part number for the assembly but each part has a stamped part number. I'll get the numbers off of it next time I'm out in the shop.

I found one! $680. Thinking I might go the Allison 1000/2000 route instead

Yeah they aren't cheap when you find them. With the 1000/2000, you'll need a controller too which are rather pricey also.
