Another Paint Thread!

Well the time has come to paint the bus, I know paint has been covered here endlessly and from all of my reading this seems to be the cheapest fastest way with decant results.

Really just looking for everyones opinion on this before I commit the time and money on supplies etc and see if anything can be improved upon etc.

1. Spray down wash the bus at a car/truck wash with normal soap etc.
2. Put TSP mix in a bug sprayer and then scrub the bus with a stiff brush.
3. Spray down again with plain water in pressure washer.
3. And Would I use acetone or mineral spirits, as a pre wipe down right before rolling on the rustoleum paint?

It seems everyone has better luck with just straight uncut paint and a foam roller.

I really don't want to sand the bus, unless it's make or brake the paint will peel off in 5 years I really don't want to sand.

Spray is out the question I hate spraying.

With paint, prep is key. You have many good steps, but I add:

You don't need to sand the old paint off, but it is nice to scuff the old paint with sandpaper or Scotchbrite pad (grey or green) if it is glossy. This gives the new paint some teeth to adhere.

I do a quick wipe with lacquer thinner to get any missed wax or grease.

I realize that adding a few steps to a large vehicle = time, but so does scraping/repaint.

Don't thin the paint much at all. I prefer to spray 'cuz rivets.

Good luck !

Liquid Sandpaper or any liquid de-Glosser as a final wipe down will greatly aid in adhesion. And instead of thinner, add just a little Penetrol. It will help the paint flow out and reduce brush & roller marks. You can get an almost sprayed-on finish with it.

Thanks for the feedback, never heard of Penetrol how much of it would I mix in a gallon of paint? As for de-Glosser I have heard acetone and a Scotchbrite pad work the best over the ready made stuff or should I get the ready made stuff?

OK new plan!

1. Wash bus with pressure washer and normal car soap.
2. Spray TSP from sprayer and scrub with scrub brush's.
3. Repeat step one.
4. Tape off.
5. Wipe with degloss stuff.
6. Wait 10-20 mins then roll on paint.

If using Rustoleum or any oil based enamel, add a catalyst hardener. Available at tractor supply. valspar also sell one.

I have no idea if can spray paint is different...but I used a black spray paint to redo my battery bay, and I did zero prep work, clung on like a champion over the regular paint.

I'm using the FT200 Finish 1 Surface Cleaner product sold by Sherwin-Williams through their automotive refinishing division (probably not available at their home paint stores). I guess it was expensive at $20/gal, though I've only used about half a gallon so far doing wash-sand-wash of the new sheet metal I'm putting on my bus. It's all new, which is to say 10 feet high and 38 feet long, both sides.

I like that this product doesn't melt nitrile gloves the way acetone and xylene do, yet they advertise it as "FT200 is a fast evaporating, mild solvent wash used to remove wax, oil, grease and silicone contaminants from all O.E. finishes, Acrylic Lacquer, fresh or uncured enamels and all sanded surfaces." Wipe it on with one rag, wipe off with another before the product dries.
