Buying derelict rv for parts
I'm sure this has been done, any comments or tips? I'm looking at a 2003 rv On craigslist.
2003 CEDAR CREEK CAMPER W/15FT SLIDE 'NEEDS REPAIRS' - $2300 (LONDON)
2003 CEDAR CREEK PULL CAMPER, 29FT., 15FT SLIDE OUT, CLEAN TITLE, DAMAGED ON BOTH SIDES, FRONT AND REAR. HAVE SOME PARTS TO FIX IT OR USE FOR PARTS. USED VERY LITTLE BEFORE WRECKED. $2300 OBO. LONDON.
They are asking way too much money but I'm a cheapskate so I always say that.
I'm pretty sure I can salvage the ac and frig, plus between a hundred and a thousand smaller parts, Im thinking the "wiring harness" could be moved to my 40 ft Amtran Genesis. I'm thinking lots of little parts will come in handy.
I figure I'll strip it down to the frame and use as flatbed trailer or sell to a farmer for hay. I have a huge barn, could keep it dry in there for a year or two as I strip it down.
Would only offer about 850 for it, though.

Re: Buying derelict rv for parts
I don't buy campers at the salvage auction, but if that was a fifth wheel or something, that would be about the going price. And you are thinking in the right direction, as appliances should be the newer ones for numerous reasons.

Re: Buying derelict rv for parts
Buy? I see free ones (" just need to get the whole thing out of the yard") on CL all the time. Or not very far above free. There is only so much you can salvage out of a camper-the appliances-windows-door-cusions maybe-but the general structure of your average camper is pretty flimsy. There were designed to be light-and cheap to manufacture-not last forever.

Re: Buying derelict rv for parts
There is an add on craigslist for a 98' fifth wheel being parted out...
Due to lack of appliance savoy, what should I look for in a/c"s and fridges to stay away from?
Any help would be appreciated. I wil be the first one there, according to owner...
I am going to see it on Saturday 12/24. They are roof mounted a/c's and he only said the fridge "works good" ? I do know the obvious like rust and leaking stuff, but not sure about different makes... Thx!

Re: Buying derelict rv for parts
One normally doesn't see 2003 year model fifth wheels for free on craigslist, or i would have 27 of them on my property... A 1998 one in most instances will have usable appliances, and you can always check online after you know the make and model for the problems that might exist for that particular unit. And if the stuff is cheap enough, you can always sell it to someone else if you don't want it...

Re: Buying derelict rv for parts
That is why you should opt for a trailer. Easier to sell off the stripped clean frame.

Re: Buying derelict rv for parts
A buddy of mine is in the process of ripping the guts out of a couple wrecked small travel trailers and putting the salvaged parts into a semi-truck's sleeper cab he's mounted to an old truck bed trailer frame. Everything has been salvaged for it.
Mainly it's just a churck-wagon and bathroom area. When I've been camping with them it is usually a big group and most either tent-camp or have a RV of some sort. The sleeper cab is mainly an easier way of carrying the generator, water sources, and bathroom for the communal area. Last time I went there was about 30 people camping together.
I'm not sure where he is in the process. I don't think he's that far past getting the parts to start the project. But last time we talked about it there was an idea of having an extra large water tank to supply the group if needed. Also having a macerator and several 50 gal plastic barrels to have in the back of a pickup to use as cheap tote tanks for grey and black water.
The idea came from the simple fact we are about half-way between Greenwich, KS and Joplin, MO. Great thing to have for camping but it is also a good preparation for friends and family in case of another nasty natural disaster. I'll get pictures next time I make it up to his place.
