CDL to Pick Up Bus

I have been searching auctions, and one of them specifically stated they will not release the bus to anyone who does not have a commercial drivers license with a passenger rating.

My question is, will I run into that with any public school type sale through auction and I won't be able to drive the bus off site myself even though when it is re-titled when I get back to Michigan I won't need a commercial license. Thanks

Mine was picked up from a school without that requirement. I have seen auctions like you are looking at. Just depends.

Thanks, probably pays for me to make a call before making a bid. I appreciate the input.

Mine was picked up from the school district without any CDL requirements. My understanding is the CDL requirement would hold if you were in the business of transporting people. If that specific bus was the one for you, I'd call and see if they'd let it go seeing as how you are not going to use it in that manner. Otherwise, I'd just keep looking. Good luck.

By NY DMV standards, the weight limit is 26,000 gvw. Over that and you need a CDL.

Washington State and a number of others require a CDL for any bus that seats 16 or more including the driver.

Laws can vary considerably from state to state. Check out YOUR STATES laws.

Don't blindly follow advice from me, in Washington, when it comes to laws in Florida. There are some folks here that work under the impression that the laws and practices in their state must apply in all states.

That said, many folks choose to bend the rules in order to get the bus home.

Regarding auction pickup. I have only seen a few auctions that require a CDL for pickup. If you are stuck on a bus that has that requirement then you may consider hiring a driver to get it off of the lot.
