Cement backer board vs. plywood

I'm planning to tile the entry of our bus (not using a traditional mortar/grout application, so cracking or buckling of the tile itself should not be an issue). It's a vertical surface with bolts sticking out 1/4", so I can't apply anything directly to the surface, and need to build it out slightly.

In most residential applications, cement board (hardiebacker) would be used for this. Has anyone had problems with cement board cracking in a bus? It is cement-based, after all, and the entry will see quite a bit of movement and traffic. We're more familiar with using hardiebacker, but if I find out cracking is a problem, we can always use ply.

Personally, I think that all the flexing and vibration that bus body experiences will cause failure of any cement based media (including Hardy or backer board). I have seen relatively small areas, such as an isolated countertop hold up pretty well with the use of two-part epoxy grout, but a metal wall surface is going to torque and twist more than you might imagine and more than many mediums can tolerate.

My dos centavos.

PS...I work with cement based media for a living and love the stuff. But it's not for everything.

Thanks Tango, exactly the info I'm looking for. Plywood it is.
