Conversion and California DMV

Hello everyone! My boyfriend and I are new to this group and also new to Skoolie life. About 3 weeks ago we picked up our bus. As of now we are still in demo stage, and also handling DMV stuff. I was hoping someone on here could help answer some questions for us. First off we live in California. I know guidelines can be different in each state so I though I would start there.... We have been in contact with the DMV several times about what their requirements are for converting a school bus into a motorhome, and we keep getting unclear information. I’m wondering if someone in our state could give us a rundown on what exactly needs to be done in order for the DMV to accept our application for conversion. Thank you so much!!! 😊

What’s your bus. What is it’s GVWR on the VIN tag?

If under 14001 GVWR, no change in title is necessary. If it’s over that then you’ll need to convert the title to MH. To do that you’ll need a bed, a toilet, a stove, and a sink. Then contact a VIN verifier that for about $150 will inspect the vehicle and take care of the paperwork to convert the title the MH. Until then I don’t think you can register anymore.

Assuming it’s diesel
