Cost of parts

I need to get my state inspection done on the bus, and one of my low-beams was not working, so when I went to remove the headlight I found that the metal bracket the headlight mounts to was completely rusted out on the driver side, and only slightly better on the other one. My headlights were pretty close to just falling out!

Unfortunately, there are no big rig wrecking yards in Austin, so I called up the International dealer to order a pair of headlight brackets. I was thinking the price would be high, like $25.00 each. The price they quoted me: $109.00 each! I was incredulous! I think I'll look around a bit longer I told the guy. So I found someone on the internet in Ohio who was willing to ship me two used ones for $42.00 including shipping (http://www.usedschoolbusses.com/index.html). But that was going to take at least a week or two and I want my bus functional ASAP.

So in a last ditch effort, I searched my local craigslist, not expecting to find anything; but amazingly some guy was selling the front hood of a bus that he had pulled the engine from. I asked if he would sell me just the headlights & brackets and sure enough I just got back from pulling them and paid $20 for the brackets and headlights! Yay! It's not often the universe throws me a bone, but today was this dog's lucky day.

He also wanted to sell me some rear tires that look like they have very low miles on them, but there is some minor cracking from age. He wanted $100 each, plus we would have to pay to have a mobile service come swap them out. I don't have a lot of $$ to spend right now and my tires still have some life on them so I will likely pass up that deal.

Sorry gbstewart I didn't pay attention to those details since I pretty much knew I wasn't going to be able to buy them. I still have the guy's phone number if you are interested in contacting him.

Chances are that if they are in Austin, they would be summer grip. Probably isn't such a thing as snow tires in that part of the state. Matter of fact, I've never seen a snow blower in person before and if Texas has a snow plow, it's probably in a museum.

True enough! If we get even an inch of snow here in Austin (which is about all we ever get) the city comes to a halt until the snow melts off, which usually takes about one day.

Wow, that's some snow gb. About where do you live? Here in the Pacific NW we had no (lowland) snow. Not all that much rain either.
