cutting skirt off

I want to cut the skirt off my bus to put on toolboxes. a friend tried a cutoff wheel on his and it was lousy, time consuming and ultimately too much for it, so he used a blowtorch and it was a mess, jagged not straight and dangerous. has anyone had luck with anything else or is the cutoff wheel and patience the way to go. any experiences, suggestions.
thanks
adam

Re: cutting skirt off

We have a plasma cutter that works great for things like that. It leaves a nice cut.

Re: cutting skirt off

i agree a plasma cutter is prob the best option if you have access.

another alternative is a standard circular saw like this:

with an abrasive blade for metal. you can buy a few from home depot or about any hardware. I also like small cut-off wheels for the angle grinder, but the circular saw does a great job at making straight cuts. Sawz-all will do the trick, but again it's difficult to cut straight.

i'm not a safety nut, but you'll want safety glasses and ear protection.

ive got lots of experience with those cut off wheels and they are great they make the best cuts the thicker the slower the cut if you but the cut off wheels only buy WALTER brand these by far are the best last longer and no chunks a flying oh yes safety third! tim

Re: cutting skirt off

If you used a cutting wheel or torch and it left a jagged edge, you could always put a piece of aluminum trim all along that edge to conceal the ugly cut. It would give it a nice finished look.

Re: cutting skirt off

Angle grinder with cutoff wheel, plus goggles AND face shield. Work slowly, replace many wheels. Easier to control than bigger cutoff wheel in skil saw, but that works too. Sawsall is a useful tool, but it's the "shotgun" of cutting tools.
