Cool Do you have an awning on your bus?

If so, just wondering what kind you ended going with and where you got it from. Was it easy/difficult to install? An awning seems almost prerequisite to me and I wanna get an idea of what to look for.

Hey there, we don't have an awning yet but from research and talking with professionals in the field a custom sun-setter seems to the be consensus best bet. I think we were quoted at $1200 and $200 for a remote. We'll have this installed in the next few months...

Haven't decided completely, I've been lookin' at the Keder rail and rope/welt set up. I could then remove it, fold it up and store inside when not in use. Also could make it almost as long as my bus with retractable/telescopic legs that mount in a flange to the side of the bus......If that made any sense.

Building my own frame out of ridgid conduit 11x20 frame and thinking about soaking some canvas tarps in used veggie oil for the top.
Long story short I have a friend that runs most of his vehicles off of fish fry oil from a local oyster bar and he gets 700-1000 gallons a year and I am helping him build a system using a million BTU hydronic boiler, propane, I salvaged from a demo. Job to help process his fuel.
Old style oil soaked canvas to a point is what I am thinking? Just have to deal with the something smells fishy thing for a while.
And all the WVO people PLEASE don't ask for advice. I am learning myself and the man I am helping has as much time between work for pleasure and work for money as I do!
NONE.
When I feel like I have edejumecated myself enough to be of any help then I will be sure to comment or post in your forum.
Not for a little while but I am learning sumptin that could benefit me,you,us?
What's it gonna take to finish?
Time and money baby.
How much?
I don't know?
More time than money as long as we don't have any money?
Sorry gotta get back to work.

Well, it sounds like a used awning is not out of the question and it might be possible to rig up a DIY custom job... Which is good to know because $1500 would be out of my league.

I'm presently keeping my eye out for an 8 footer. I have concluded they are NOT all that common. If anyone runs across a mechanical unit in that size...please...give a shout.

Why not just cut down one that is too big?

Hoping to find a new one that I can afford. Also, I want the type on which the support legs attach to the bus...not the ground. Had one of those years ago and if you wanted to move the bus to take better advantage of the angle of the sun/shade...you had to take the whole thing down.

And, just an observation, but...why is it that every awning there is seems to have such universally tacky, crappy looking patterns & colors?

Free is good! I cut down a 20 ft "Super Shade" I removed from a wrecked S&S. It turned out that the recoil mechanism is a one size fits all deal so shortening the roller to 6 ft to fit my little bus was no problem. I tossed the ugly multi-colored vinyl material and replaced it with material made by Sunbrella (or something like that) awning material I found on ebay for a couple of bucks a yard.

Like Tango, I wanted the legs mounted to the bus and luckily this unit can be used either way.

If an awning isn't available at a local junk yard, Craig's List is bound to have one sooner or later. Jack

Good news Jack. Honestly, I had no idea the mechanical part could be cut down. That opens up a host of possibilities. Thanx!

That's what I was getting at. All you have to do is shorten the awning tube.

I'll bet you will come up with some crazy-creative and well-fabbed solution.
I can't wait to see what sort of "mil grade" awning Tango comes up with!

Ours came with one - but we may have to replace it....

I read a very nifty bit of advice in a book after the fact - make sure you have a cover for it when rolled up....

50+mph gusts...we had a sailbus for a few miles!! We don't yet know if it's salvageable - but the mechanism is still good and I found a place for inexpensive replacement canvas - I hope.

I would like one on my project, have seen them on craigslist, when I do get one I would like the one that has the screen wall attachment, the skeeters down here will eat you for breakfast lunch and dinner.
