Engine Immobilser - have I already got one?

By UK Law my bus (2001 International) must have an engine immobilser fitted...

"An immobiliser or immobilizer is an electronic security device fitted to an automobile that prevents the engine from running unless the correct key (or other token) is present. This prevents the car from being "hot wired" after entry has been achieved."

My question is...errr....do I already have one fitted? The engine has an Electronic Control Module....could you start it without the key??

Why don't you just install a pure copper interruptor (switch) between the battery HOT and the fusebox? The rule doesn't say that you have to provide that the motor be started by a key. I put in such interruptors in a US car and in my Brazilian bus. If hidden, it works much better than any ignition keyswitch.

The front half of your bus is an International medium duty truck... if you can locate an International dealer ask them what they have done for this. Then go track down a junkyard with what you need.

I don't know if he will find much in that regard. He's in The UK. Do they sell International Navistar products there?

Thumbs up

Since the bus is new enough to have an electronically controlled pump, without the key being turned on there is no way that the engine will start.

If you were able to hot wire the ignition it might be possible to get the engine to start.

If what you are asking is did IC/Navistar/International use chips in keys to limit who could start their vehicles the answer is no. The vast majority of the trucks and buses the company sold went to fleets where having keyed alike was a common option. Keyed alike and chipped keys don't go well together.

If you have to some sort of key operated immobilizer I would suggest you get a key operated kill switch for the battery. Anything else would just get overly complicated.

Here is one that might work. http://www.colehersee.com/home/item/cat/208/75920/

So if you cant start it without a key then it has an immobiliser. I guess I need to get an email from International to that effect. If I can claim to UK authorities that you cant start without a key they will be happy...

Looks like you could get one at a pretty reasonable price. This is the first one I came up with. I'm sure there are others.

All of the speculation by everyone over here isn't really going to do you any good. It's not a requirement here so, you would not have it. Looks like it wouldn't be all that hard to add something.
