Engines and trannies...

My question concerns cost of overhauling, cost of parts, mpg,
availability of engines and transmissions and durability.

My situation: am considering buying a 40ish foot skoolie with fe and no hood - engine front but under the floor. I would like it to have an auto trans - I understand there is a trans now that needs to be shifted but does not have a manual cliutch - that is also OK. I would like to b able to cruise at 70 mph without the engine blowing up. I am willing to put a 4.x rear end in the bus. I have even seen two speed rear ends that might be useful. I am going to raise the rrof by about 1.5 feet.

My question: can a cummins 5.9l 24 valve be set up to give this kind of performance and economy? I like this engine bcuz parts are relatively inexpensive, the engines are very durable and have an endless stream of mods for them. Which auto tranny (pref a 5 speed) would go with this. What kind of mpg can i expect?
