Thanks, Doug!
I'm pretty sure we'll be fine. Our roof may not fare so well, we may lose some windows, but the buses and mopeds should be fine!

I hear that they just opened up the southbound lanes of 75 for evacuation traffic. We have decided to stay put and remain in a shelter.

I know they did it in georgia yesterday... just express lanes only in the cities..

florida claimed they still needed southbound to try and get supplies into those in non evac zones and get gasoline / diesel into the areas with new evacuation orders.

time is running out so if they did it this afternoon on I-75 that might help till they snarl somewhere else like at I-10.. I often wonder if there wouldnt be a higher density way to move people.. Busses? many people are headed to various cities in georgia / tennessee. and up into the non-coastal carolinas, etc.. of course people are worried aboutlosing their cars.. but there is also hoarding going on.. ie my apartment building in st pete.. has a 1000 space garage.. interior 2014 built.. IMPACT ceritified building.. most all of its residents are leaving.. even when all residents are there. i was told there is like 425 cars... they put out an order.. "residents cars only.. no visitors, family, friends, etc"... thats likely 600 spaces going to be EMPTY!! rather than go to good use.. ie rent the spaces out to people who agree to use a provided Bus service to evacuate... ie "you help us reduce traffic, we help save your car".. but nothing like that seems to be going on..

Thinking of all of you on the west coast of Florida... I am relieved for my family and bus on the east coast, but it's hard to rejoice when so many people you care about are in harm's way.

Did the restaurant go out of business, or did everyone die from clogged arteries?

word has it that management got greedy in a family feud and as a result the building it was in was let to fall apart.. once cleanliness goes - so goes the restaraunt.. I loved the place.. used to eat there alot..

And knock down the smoke, too! This morning, it looked like it was going to rain - no such luck.

Why do people wait until the last minute to get out of Dodge?

Its not as easy to move millions of people like you think. There's no way to tell where its gonna hit till a couple days out then its full on GTFO mode. But its GTFO mode for literally millions of people this time.

people like to think "its not gonna hit me".. this pareticular storm had its original sites set on Miami / Homestead.. leaving the west coast of florida to just have tropical storm conditions.. which means a long bad thunderstorm..

Orlando / central florida might have been spared as the storm was forecast to go out to sea and go to the carolinas.. so that area wouldve seen bad weather but not what they are in the path for now..

now the florida west coast is dead ground zero forecast to slam in just north of ft myers and hit st pete / tampa bay HARD.. then its going to go inland a bit as it heads north which puts the central florida areas (orlando and surrounding) in more of the worst rain / wind areas of the storm..

the problem is MANY people have nowhere to go... just because theres a storm doesnt mean people have the funds to travel hundreds of miles away and get a hotel room somewhere... (esp when they are already missing work... sometimes a LOT of work if their workplace is damaged or loses power ) shelters fill up and conditions detiorate quickly.. esp once the power and A/C die.. bad enough storm, the cell towers go down so lots of scared screaming smelly kids (generators in shelters are usually life-critical systems only but not A/C.. { I have heard some schools can run fully on genny} flooding may not reach the shelter building but the toilets may very well fail to function as the city sewer systems getr swamped...

so people tend to wait to see if they can survive it..

I did a search of open hotel rooms in the Metro Atlamta area.. which is roughly 500 miles from tampa... and its fully sold out.except for 2 rooms at $250 each per night...

no rooms in chattanooga which is another 100 miles up I-75.

so you can see even if you do want to leave tough to find a place to go.. many have already left.. so the traffic flow up I-75 actually shows halfway decent with just a few 5 mile traffic jams..

one of my friends from st pete drove it starting friday morning at 2am before they issued the mandatory evac order.. it normally takes him 17 hours.. it took him 27....

Weird. I live in GA off of I-85, about 30 miles NE of Atlanta and drove in/out of there this morning. While there was some traffic on 285 on the SE side, everything else (on my route) was quite moderate and moving smoothly.

Weird. Almost like the threat of Hurricane is cathartic, like Forest Fire. Helps clear-out the riff-raff.

We are all thinking about you guys. Stay safe, and if you decide to HMB...BRB make sure you live stream to Youtube so the rest of us can be entertained.

We who are painting our rigs in the Midwest thank you for keeping the weather at bay.

Well, that just makes me very angry...

I am still in Tampa Bay - not in an evacuation zone - but the wind will be a concern. The house is old. So it is what it is.

However, I would never leave without my dogs. I bought a bus for this reason - my dogs will be safe here - if not in the house - I am sure the bus will be standing tall after the storm!

I grew up in Louisiana. There were always those who wanted to "ride it out." Of course, I also watched Katrina. New Orleans really screwed the pooch on that one. They could easily have had buses running around, picking up people and heading out of harm's way - but NO. They left the buses and victims stranded. Houston could well have done the same. And now? Florida. How many of those cars you see in the news were single occupants?

I know that it's extremely difficult to evacuate the millions that will be affected. Most of those WANT to go. I'm talking about those who are foolish enough to remain behind, thinking that this massive storm will either not affect them or only in a minor way.

Me? I'm glad I'm in Montana (south central), where natural disasters are rare. No flooding where I'm parked, no seismic events, and the Father's Day twister from 2010 was a rarity. Mind you, if Yellowstone NP goes up, I'm in for it.
