Power just back on 5 min ago. Survived!!!
Only minor shingles damage at the Ocala house.
All in all, my family and I were all very lucky.
Hope others had same luck too.

Well, first I have to spend 6k on a roof for my parents' house ;-(
I was planning on it anyways when I bought it.
But yes, school or large van is definitely in the plans !!!

I had an employee that refused to get a cell phone. He has a home phone, internet... but no cell. Until we had a 100yr flood (seems like Houston gets a 100yr flood every other year). He didn't show into work. After noon I called to check in on him - no answer. Called his emergency contact (mom) and she FREAKED out - I had to rescue him from 3 feet of water. The company gave him the prepaid phone. His mom made him continue to pay for it.

Well- we survived.
We've been HARD at work cutting up downed trees in friends and neighbors' yards. We had nothing to clean up in our yard, as I got rid of the big oaks.
The power was initially restored to the rich neighborhoods, then nothing for the rest of us for two days.
There was NO effort to clear the streets of debris or get any power back on for quite a while. Eustis was totally out of power till tonight. The whole community came together and got the streets cleared. That was ALL US, no help from the city or county.
FUNNY part is- we drove the van 35 miles to Roxy's dad's, since his power was on. He was loaning us a generator. We get home with generator after a horrible ordeal with no power, and our lights were on!
Its been an awful week. My youngest brother died last monday. We can't even plan the funeral yet.
Haven't had ANY news or word from outside till today. Its been so crazy.
I'm ready for a nice, relaxing winter of working on these damn buses some more.
If our bus was finished this whole ordeal wouldn't have even really affected us much, if at all.

Not really sure how insurances work in this country. The few times my family has made an insurance claim, they got nothing.
I personally don't believe in the insurance model. I have low expectations, I always plan to pay it myself.

All clear here in NE GA. Power flickered a few times. Internet was out until about 2 hours ago. Trees are (mostly) still upright and utility companies are fixing isolated outages. No major damage in the neighborhood.

yes!!!! im glad you are shiny side up ECCB!!! the power companies work similarly up here.. we get freak windstorms and ice storms.,. when it takes out a million people. they first assess down wires... if an area has none or has underground wiring they will repair the main feeder to that area.. alas that usually means the newer richer neighborhoods because they all have the underground wires.. then they SLOWLY do the HARD work of clearing trees out and fixing older wiring systems...

Thanks, man.
Turns out I was right about Irma's death toll. Almost no one died from the actual storm. It was the mass exodus, the generators, and the lack of electricity that have killed people.
8 people dead in some Miami nursing home. Several people in different counties reported dead from CO poisoning due to improper use of generators.

thats always the way it is... the storm itself rarely kills.. other than those that try and drive through water, or a tornado strikes..
as I told my friends in Miami who are new to florida and decided to ride it out.. "STAY INSIDE" as soon as the winds were below 70 they wanted to venture out of their apartments... but its those downed wires, weakened trees, flooded streets, etc that are dangerous..
the nursing home PISSES me off.. as im quite certain the STAFF shouldve been able to do SOMETHING for these residents.. even wheeling them outside for part of the day.. break the freakin windows out in a couple rooms to get some air circulation through... pour water on them..
they build all these buildings with the windows sealed shut so when the A/C fails there is nothing you can do...
the Exact issue my friends in miami have.. their apartment windows are sealed shut.. many people up north fail to understand that its STILL SUMMER IN FLORIDA!!

That's a horrible shame. I've heard that the Facility has been grossly neglectful in many areas other than the recent reported deaths. So then, think about this...the poor Nurse who IS good and kind hearted and does her very best caring for Seniors while on her shift, who felt her hands were tied and not allowed to take matters into her own hands...ie take them outside, break a window etc. without worrying about the repercussions. Those nurses are probably suffering the loss of those lives right along with the family. My daughter in law is such a nurse in a Nursing facility here in NY, quiet, soft spoken and loves her work with the Elderly. It really hurts her when she loses a patient. I can't wait to get her feedback when I see her.

I go in and out of nursing homes all the time. It all comes down to how much money does the patient pays monthly.
For example take an old veteran that also has a retirement from his city job. He gets SS, city retirement, vet benefits.
On the opposite end you have a now adult that was born with special needs and his family doesn't have the financial means to help him.
Each of these patients will go to total different nursing homes. The amount of resources and the level of trained staff differs tremendously.
As a society, we should take pride in the way we care for the weak and fragile. Unfortunately, much work needs to be done in that area.
