Face shield?

What face-shield/helmet do you recommend for use in angle grinder/cutting wheel applications where you will have the wheel sometimes in plane with your face?

I always have the guard on my grinder.. I dont know of a face shield that will stop a 1/4" grinding wheel grenade at full speed.. I use a standard home depot shield.. I wear a good thick jacket and gloves.. if im concerned about sparks in my hair ill wear a hardhat.

and geberally when im cutting and grinding I hold my head off to one side so if things fly apart the grinder doesnt kick back into my face. . ive had a cut off wheel grenade before.. and ther gouges in the grinder guard were pretty impressive.. the noise was impressive..

I brushed the pieces off my safety gear put a new wheel on and went about..

a great question.
A full face shield is totally worth it when grinding.
They've saved my eyes/face many a time.

Some decent work gloves would be another essential item when grinding.
I worked in a job where I was grinding steel daily. You really want that face shield and gloves.
Honestly- you want safety glasses, a face shield, AND leather gloves.

Thank you! That TSC one looks like what I was thinking I had seen people using die/angle grinders use.

Yes sir.
Even after over a decade of grinding metal I never skimped on safety gear.
I had a coworker who got metal in his eye and they drilled it out. ooof!

the TSC one is similar to what i use.. i got mine at home depot.. I like them because you can replace the shield often.. im always scratching mine up but the replacement shields are super cheap so i keep a pack of them around and just swap out the shield.. and like i mentioned before i NEVER grind without the Guard on and adjusted such that it protects me .. not only from wheel explostion but a properly adjusted guard protects you from grinder kick back if you accidentilly bind the wheel up..

I never ever take the guard off an angle grinder or die grinder. Its just asking for trouble!

Has anyone seen these new fangled safety saws? Watched a table saw a while back that with the blade spinning full bore, ready to cut, if yo touch the blade it stops so fast it doesn't cut you.
CRAZY and I'm not about to test it or trust it but wow!

A friend of mine was cutting tubes out of a boiler with a cut off wheel on a grinder, it got pinched and threw it back in his face, went clean through his face shield and stopped embedded in his safety glasses, he didn't get hurt bad just scratches but had to go clean his shorts out. The guard may have been removed, I don't remember.

I think I tossed mine with the box. At least on one of them.

Guards are not foolproof. They won't keep particles out of your eyes. If using one without a guard, have more respect for the tool. Some jobs can't be done with the guard in place.
Here's half a cut off wheel that broke and got stuck in the soffit of the house.

Layers!! alas why there are face shields.. and some even wear safety glasses and face shields.. I doubt a face shield alone would stop a broken cut off wheel like Marc's..

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why you don't put body parts in line with the plane of a grinding disk, cut off wheel, saw blade, etc.

I wear leather gloves and stay out of the rotational plane when working with grinders.
