Foam mattress material for beds?

I've decided that the old futon mattresses I've got in my bus are just not cutting it. My back is not at all happy sleeping on them. I'm also thinking of widening my lower bunks by a few inches, and I will have to make some cuts in the new mattress to fit in my existing framing, so it will be a non-linear shape (ie: not a rectangle). So I'm thinking foam would be a good option. I want something thick enough to be comfortable, and hopefully something reasonably affordable. I'm sure there are different types of foam, and different places to get it. I'm open to any suggestions y'all want to throw out there...

Thanks!

I found this place a while ago. thought I'd give them a try when I get to that point. I need a special size that they list.

I have had good luck with dense closed cell foam matress blanks which I cut to shape and cover with vinyl on the bottom and sides and with a loose weave cloth automotive material (think Crown Vic cop car) on the top. All vinyl is too hot or cold or too sticky and all cloth doesn't wear well.

I used to own one of those Crown Vic cop cars. I bought it at auction. That was my favorite car of all time! If it wasn't for the cost of fuel, I'd still be driving one today.

I made it so our bunks use the old seat cushion foam. Very nice. Put a foam topper on top of them.

I agree that foam can be really hot, but I don't know what alternative there is when you have to be able to cut it to a custom size. Our local Habitat ReStore gets foam from a local factory that makes furniture. I've used it to make a couple beds and they work fine, even if you have to piece together multiple pieces of foam. If you have to cut it, an electric knife (the kind for cutting meat) works really well.

Re: Foam mattress material for beds?

I started with 6 inch foam, figuring that if need be I would addon to it. Got two twin bed mattresses ($100.00 each) off of Ebay.

Hubbys okay with his I added a featherbed (6 inch deep) to mine. We spent more than probably necessary but we plan to full time and both of us with bad backs needed something that would be comfortable and refreshing each & every morning.

There really is no right mattress or wrong mattresses, just get the best you can afford, cause after sitting in the drivers seat & driving many hours, you want something you can look forward to climbing into.

Booger (yes, I'm back)
