For those will tile bathrooms/backsplashes...do they hold up to road vibration?

We are debating wall finishes and I am wondering if tile is holding up to the vibration and harshness over time. Worst thing would be to start having cracks and fractures 1yr in.

Any word?

I put floor tile in my last bus with good result. It was a bit different though. It was an Eagle 10 not a skoolie. Similar concerns though, flex & vibration.

I put down two layers of 3/4 exterior plywood glued and screwed. Then a layer of 1/2 cement board glued and screwed. The RedGuard and finally the tile.

It was HEAVY.

I ran over 200k miles on all sorts of roads and did manage to crack one tile. It was one that I notched about 80% of its depth to accommodate a doorway.

I really liked it but the weight may be a bit much for some skoolies.

I think a properly applied tile backsplash is entirely doable though.

You will have the most problem with the grout cracking. Use a polymer based grout that is intended for use with luxury vinyl tile (LVT). I have used it on lots of projects with a zero failure rate.

I have seen this in manufactured homes. They used standard grout and it cracked and came out in chunks. The ground it all out and re grouted with the flexible stuff.

In mine the regular grout held up fine but I went to great lengths to stiffen the sub floor.

Smaller tile and two-part epoxy grout will provide the best results. But only if the surface is extremely rigid and somewhat isolated from body flex. Even then there can be issues. Me...I'd avoid tile.

I don't have any experience with it, but what about peel and stick tiles?

These are 12 inch by 24 inch luxury vinyl tiles with polymer grout. I installed these in my foyer just this past week. Have installed them in several other homes and they hold up really well too floors that Flex.

Good call. Vinyl will take the abuse and flexing, ceramic will usually crack.
