Smile Help! Please

This is a bus I am interested in! It looks to be in good condition but I cannot find anything about it online... has anyone heard of or worked with these? The post also says it cannot be driven home on the highway ans states some code.... is that due to engine type or lack of some of the lights?

I am new to skoolies but very interested in buying one. Here is the link: Public Surplus: Auction #1534540

And the basic specs:
Year: 2003
Make: INTERNATIONAL
Model: IC3S530
Mileage: 97,120
VIN: 4DRBRABL03A953619
Running Condition: FAIR
Engine: V8 INTERNATIONAL T444E, 7.3 L
Transmission: AUTOMATIC, ALLISON 2000 SERIES
Body Style: CONVENTIONAL
Tires: 255 / 70R22.5
Brakes: AIR BRAKES

Any help appreciated!!
Thank you <3

I did, and I am not sure I understand specifically what I read. I also asked the seller who said to ask DMV, so I thought I would ask this helpful community if they had heard of it before.

Why assume the worst in me? Goodness. Especially if you are not going to offer to help.

i read it as:

the bus is no longer legal as a "school" bus.

my reason is because the devices are removed and the words blacked out. so its in violation of the school bus code.

No, i am not a lawyer, but i did sleep in a bus last night.

My guess is that since this is no longer a school bus, it's a violation to operate it on the road while painted yellow.

I read it as you can't use it as a passenger carrying school bus anymore. Thats all. Its pretty much the same in all states-if they didn't remove the signs + lights, you were going to have to right away.

I approved your post. I didn't assume anything. Three others gave an answer and I ASSUME they are guessing the reason as to why it can't be legally driven. I am also going to ASSUME that they looked the code up on google. Your best bet is to call the state highway patrol and ask for a commercial officer. Since that will be the person pulling you over for the violation.

Sorry if you think I'm being short. Someone peed in my Cheerios this morning and I'm not too happy about it.

I read the code.

Since the school bus equipment and lettering have been disabled or made opaque it is illegal to operate the vehicle painted yellow.

You should be fine getting it home.

As for price, the current price is well below scrap so it is a terrific bargain right now.

At a dealer the asking price would be in the $10K neighborhood.

The T444E is a great engine and is good for about 300-350K miles.

The Allison 2000 series transmission is most likely a 5-speed with OD in at least the top gear. Depending upon the gear ratio it should be able to cruise easily at 60-65 MPH.

Since it has air brakes it most likely has rear air suspension.

I can see two condensors in the skirt on the driver's side so it most likely has a larger A/C system that may or may not work.

Up to $6K it is would still be a good bargain. $8K would be high but still not a bad price. Over $8K find another bus.

Good luck!

The price is so low, I may have to throw a low bid in and risk a possible trip to VA.
I always find some bus I really wish I could buy, but they're usually out west.
I almost cried watching that 93 Carpenter in CA I was watching go for less than a thousand bucks.
