Hot Water Heaters

Delving into my past, I remembered conditions of living on the economy in what was then West Germany.

Over the sink was a 5 litre boiler. This, you fill up with water, turn it on and, voila, hot water. Took a short while to heat the water. It operates on 240 VAC. Packaged with the spout, it's only €218 (about $245 US) 5 litre boiler

In the shower, about a 30 litre boiler. This one is constantly plumbed so you don't have to fill it first. It does, however, need to be turned on beforehand. It, too, requires 240 VAC to operate. €321 (about $360 US) 30 litre boiler 30 litres is more than enough to take a shower, unless your connected to city water.

I lived with the "inconvenience" before. It won't be a stretch now. Besides, I won't have to cut holes in the roof/side for the heater vent.

Just wondering why you would want to heat up hot water? .

I may be too late but you might want to look at the Atwood/Kuuma water heaters. These operate off of 120/240 and also have a heat exchanger so you can plumb engine coolant thru them to heat the water. I've built an all electric coach and went this route (the 11 gallon version), so far it is working great (though I have not yet plumbed the coolant thru it).

Click on the links in the initial post!

Major advantage to these water heaters: You don't need to cut into the skin of the bus to vent them.

SO why a 240v 1 gallon water heater at a premium price vs a 120v unit??

  1. 30 liters is almost 8 gallons, enough for a shower,
  2. German engineering vs. cheap American engineering.
  3. 240 VAC heats up quickly.

As an American, I am deeply offended by this. Mostly because it's true.

And I got the German wall sockets today, so I don't have to jury-rig the cords.
