hydraulic to air brakes

I'm planning on changing my rear axle assmebly to something more modern. the possible donor has hydraulic brakes and my bus has air which i want to keep.
is it possible to retrofit my air brakes back onto the new axle assembly or would it be impossible?
i'm confused and also don't have the donor in front of me to even have an idea of the possibility of it.
thanks
adam

Re: hydraulic to air brakes

I would go to the donor diff.and be sure that the backing plates for the brake assembly will interchange. They should be bolted to the diff. If they will swap I can't think of any reason that you couldn't keep your existing brakes. Now here is My disclaimer: don't spend any money taking my word for something like this, check it out until You are satisfied that you can make it work. I am by no means an expert on this subject.

It would not be just the backing plates. Air Brakes also have a pair of big mounting brackets on the axle housing for the air chambers and shafts.

Why do you want to change the housing?
(Having access to a donor of newer vintage is not reason to actually use parts from that donor -- if you don't need them. I'm familiar with the temptation. )
