Insulated roof deck idea

We brought our bus home, ended up grabbing a 2003 BB TC FE with a 24v cummins with 185k on it! Anyway, the guy we purchased our bus from said his brother did a conversion a few years ago and avoided dropping the ceiling to insulate in a really cool way. He built a deck across the entire roof and insulated the negative space between the bus and bottom of the deck. This idea seems really appealing to us because our ceiling is secured with rivets and not screws. My concerns are that it would be heavier than my envisioned aluminum/thin steel roof deck, we would not know if the roof has been leaking since we would leave the ceiling intact, and it might be more difficult to install skylights. What does the hive mind think of this alternative to a ceiling removal?

Why not just do BOTH. Remove the metal ceilings and put up a roof deck for shade.
All you need is an air compressor, an air chisel, and the right method. I did a 35 foot bluebird in a day. Actually two hours. All the ceiling panels.

Our original plan was to drop the ceiling and do spray foam, and then build a roof deck with thin steel. Have you ever heard of people insulating between the deck and the bus?

I haven't specifically, but I'm sure there's something out there like you're describing.
