Is this a good buy?

Hey awesome Skoolie community. After lurking here for a long long time, I’m thinking of jumping in! I’m a total noob here looking to buy my first Skoolie. I looked at a school bus today and am wondering if you all think I should buy it?

It is a:

- 2010 international DT466
- Allison 2000 series
-220k miles
- 7 window school bus
- no rust
- in bus service until a few months ago.
- tires have 50 percent life in them
- engine looks good according to my friend who knows Diesel engines who came with
- $9900

What do you think?

Thank you!

Coachwork: Integrated Coach Corp.
Chassis: RE-300 42ft
Engine: 466ci
Rated Cap: 90
Looks clean. Okay trans. The 466 ci on 2010 & newer added more heartbreak to the already problematic DPF & EGR components of the MaxxForker466 by adding common rail injection & cheap dual turbos.

There are several informative threads on the subject, here at skoolie.net. Carefully read CadilacKid's comments in the threads below. He knows the MF specifics well & is diligent in explaining the details.

I paid half that for a 2008 bus twice the size with 90,000 less miles. Shop around. And "looks good" is not a basis for a purchase decision, the service records are.

What are the intangibles that have nothing to do with the actual bus that are also important when looking to buy a school bus?

Seller flexibility?
Comfort level that they'll handle the title properly (and not defraud) ?
Ability to inspect test drive or great things run/ see service records?
Accepts your preferred form of payment?

  • The reputation of the seller, do they have any reviews on Yelp or Google? What do mechanics in the area have to say about them?
  • The condition of the other vehicles in their inventory.
  • If you had to send a mechanic to do a prepurchase and you couldn't be there at the time, did the seller give the mechanic any grief? Was the condition of the vehicle as described?
  • This doesn't always work for buses but have you checked Carfax.com?
  • This one is something big for me... does the seller and their mechanic look you in the eye when describing condition or history of the vehicle? Often when people lie, they look in some other direction than you.

For that size bus, this sounded like a deal.
