Ladies and gentlemen, your attention please...

Had a rather interesting ride weekend before last.

Took my kid out for her first flat track motorcycle race, wifey-poo along for the ride.
On the way home, at full cruising speed on the interstate, all 8 lug studs sheared, no {known} warning signs, on the approach to an overpass.

Some folks I know say loose lugs, a couple have said over tightened...

Dont know which, the rest of the wheel were tight enough...

Pay close attention to the running gear folks, do an extensive "pre-flight"

A ride Disney could not engineer, and not one I care to take again.

Well, count your lucky stars that no one was hurt in that!
Isn't it fun to imagine what it would have been like if you were at the peak of the overpass, or on the part of the curve where you have to steer a bit tighter?
I'd still be shaking after something like that.

Yow! A pucker moment for sure.
Glad it didn't go as badly as it could have, and thanks for the reminder to check our rides before getting under way.

Cheers,
Sean

If the lugs sheared without warning odds are it was due to overtorquing them. If they were loose, there would be a distinct shimmy in the rear axle (this is the voice of ove 1.8 million miles of driving semis talking here - it's happened to me twice).

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, your attention please...

Perhaps there was a warning I didnt recognize...

All I know is that losing two rears from the same side on top of a two-lane bridge is an attention getter. Thankfully no other vehicle was around me, and the wife and child werent harmed. Got three different views of guard rails not much further apart than the length of my Kurbmaster.

After hearing the horror stories of blowouts on these rigs, I look forward to one. Couldnt be any worse than the sudden drop from 33 inch tires to a 13 inch drum!

Parts are on the way, soon to learn all about full floating axles!

Re: Ladies and gentlemen, your attention please...

I have finished replacing the brake drum, shoes and wheel cylinder. Had a bit of a problem finding replacement lug nuts, they are a bit oddball.

The local parts shop had some sent in I thought were small by sight, so I went home to remove one for comparison. while comparing the two, I noticed something VERY wrong with the one I had just removed...

CRACKED!

I have not checked all the others, and dont plan to, since they will ALL be replaced, along with every stud and full brake service while I'm in there!

So, some said they could have been loose, some say over tightened, now I find one cracked! Not sure what the cause was, but every part that MIGHT have been part of the incident will be replaced.

Pre-Flight checks!
