Looking at 2004 IC RE 84P in WV

Hey all,

Im bidding on 2004 IC RE 84P in WV.
It checks most of my boxes -
DT466E
MD3000
Air Ride
195000 miles

https://www.govdeals.com/index.cfm?f...51&acctid=5298

Looks like a decent bus. Only issues I have are -
- 5.77 gear ratio
- Bus was pulled from service because it no longer meets regulations due to rusty crossmembers.

Does anyone have any idea at what point a crossmember is to rusty to be servicable, according to regs? Im wondering if it might just be surface rust or rusted through.

Im trying to get them to post photos of the crossmembers, but no luck yet. It is to far for me to physically inspect. I will most likely pay someone to go look at it and take some photos.

Thanks

I wonder if by "rusty crossmembers" they mean crossmembers on the body or crossmembers on the chassis? That bus doesn't look particularly rusty at all in any of the other pics, so I have to wonder what sort of corrosion would take it out of service. Seems weird, I wouldn't touch this bus without an inspection or at least pics of the rust.

I'd not bid on anything being put out of service for rust, especially something far away with a seller who won't provide pics of the damage.

Awesome drive train.

Looks good in the pictures.

I would be concerned about the rust. That could quickly turn a gem into a lump of coal.

5.79 gears are not ideal. If you can get 6th gear unlocked it may be tolerable. I have the MD3060 and 5.29 gears. 6th is locked out. Mine is reasonable on the highway but any lower gear would be marginal.

Good luck.

The normal rust issues we normally face on these buses is never revealed by the seller. If it's so bad they are revealing it up front makes me want to run.
Especially if the reason it didn't pass was rust issues.

My FS-65 is geared very similarly. Cat 3126 and md3060. 5.57 rear end, final gear on the trans is 0.75OD. 2150-2200 rpm at 60mph. No complaints but I'll definitely be going to a 4.10 rear end eventually for better mileage
