Re: New Short Bus

If i didn't have a new crossmember i would remove it, clean it and rebuild it. If it is plated on top and bottom, with flat bar on the sides, (or maybe channel cut correctly) it should again work as it first did.
You should determine why it cracked in the first place. But, maybe the drivers were baha'ing the thing.
I would guess that if it was rebuilt with long pieces of metal top and bottom, etc., that it would last far longer than the original, since it is just a metal stamping that was incorrectly engineered for the application.

It also looks like you can put heavy wall angle on the sides for a bit.
Since the mount is right there, putting a piece of flat bar on top and bottom might require some holes drilled or flame cut in the right place.
And, if it were me, i would probably just build me a new crossmember out of heavy wall channel..
Hope this helps.

Re: New Short Bus

As I am sure '49 will agree, anything can be patched up good enough to use. Having spent time up your way at Eagle back in the '70's and having later dealt with disposing of over 700 pipeline trucks, I have seen many similar cases of stress fatigue in frames. Before you invest too much in repairs and conversions etc. do a THROUGH clean-up and inspection of the entire frame just to be sure you have identified all damaged areas. Assuming the rest of the frame/unibody looks good then I'd recommend replacing the X member rather than repairing it as it seems to have multiple stress cracks visible (and probably more in the making). My two cents worth.

Re: New Short Bus

I have gone moose hunting many times with my 4wd pickup with the 2 inch pipe moose guard on the front.... They are very hard to run over even if one is on a gravel road in AK...
