Besides the obvious of bedding, food, heat source, water, window / windshield blinds / shades, hygiene products, I recommend a cell phone and CB radio, as well as emergency funds for breakdowns.

If you haven't already, you may also want to get familiar with my recent Safety Inspection thread, and a recent "bus safety" thread on which several others and myself posted several useful / essential items.

A word about heaters....

Leaking heater cores supplied by engine coolant can produce toxic fumes that can cause illness or death in sufficient quantities.

Propane heaters are known to rob oxygen and possibly increase CO2 levels, which can kill in your sleep. Crack open some windows or vents if using such a heater. Also, sleep a reasonable distance away from it. This also applies to diesel / kerosene heaters.

Personally, I recommend a generator with a high-rise exhaust and electric heat. Alternately, 12V electric blankets are available as well.

toxic heater core leaks

Breathing ethylene glycol vapors may cause eye and respiratory tract irritation but is unlikely to cause systemic toxicity. Ethylene glycol is poorly absorbed through the skin so systemic toxicity is unlikely. Eye exposure may lead to local adverse health effects but is unlikely to result in systemic toxicity.

note: it says unlikely, not impossible. My own experience, says unlikely.

in regards to heater core leaks.

It all depends on your respiratory health. A leaking heater core in a taxi I drove years ago, that combined with underlying severe asthma, caused a monster bronchial infection that nearly killed me.

packing list

One of the best things I have read -- Person moved into the bus and lived in it for something like 6 months before they ever left a home base.... She said most of what she packed ended up left behind and many things she did not pack got added..... Made a ritual of once every two weeks tossed out stuff that never got used. Kept refining the what got moved into the bus until pretty much stopped adding/taking away stuff on the list.
