Paint removal

Hello! I have a 2014 e350 transit van that I just bought! I started taking the vinyl off and have most of that completed, I started to take the vinyl off the drivers side, and come to find out it is painted! Looks like there was some kind of body damage that was repaired, it looks like the van was backed into something. But not I can't get the paint off. Looks like a crappy low bid body shop job. What do you recommend to get the top layers of paint off without damaging the paint underneath?

Have you tried wet sanding? If it is a small area get some 320-400 wet and dry and water sand it by hand. You will see the layers as you cut though. If you are cutting through to fast drop back to 600 grit.

Is the body fiberglass?

Mine is fiberglass and I had to remove the vinyl wrapper, but there are two areas where they did some minor bodywork. I used a half inch, very sharp chisel and scraped the paint off.

Where the vinyl wrap refused to come off the painted stripe (over the fiberglass), I used the same technique but was much more careful.

I don't think there's any practical way to pull a top layer of paint off another layer. Sanding it, in my opinion, would never work to anyone's satisfaction.
