Painting Roof...suggestions?

Hello all.

Looking to paint the roof of my bus later on this month (possibly) and wanted to get some ideas. Saw some "mobile home" paint in HD yesterday that was Aluminum in color and had an additive. Has anyone used anything like this? I'm not to worried about the color, just curious as to if this actually works.

Is there a noticeable difference for you that have painted the roof with either ceramic or other additives? Would you recommend it or just paint it with white rustoleum? I have access to a booth and have my own guns, or is it just as easy to roll it on?

Thanks

Joseph

Re: Painting Roof...suggestions?

I followed the advice that a lot of people here gave me. I rollered the roof and sprayed the sides. I just used white rustoleum. Took about 1 1/2 gallons for the roof and then another 1 1/2 gallons to spray the sides. I did paint the hood and back a different color so that is why it only took 3 gallons of white.

You don't really see the roof and rolling it makes it thicker. If you plan to spray the sides, it took 4 hours of painting and boy was my hand cramped, I recommend breaking it up into a couple days if you can occupy the booth that long.

Re: Painting Roof...suggestions?

must be nice to have access to a booth.
Mine will not get painted till next spring, first nice week with warm temperatures will be painting time. Why Spring? Hardly any dust flying around because the ground is probably still half frozen and no insects flying yet. It will be an outdoor job.
I bought Bus Kote by http://www.hytechsales.com for my roof its supposed to add some insulation factor to the roof. Will see if it does.
Good luck painting and make sure you'll post some before and after pictures.

Re: Painting Roof...suggestions?

My roof was white when I bought the bus. Then I painted it black. I didn't notice any difference in temperature inside the bus. I don't think it gets any hotter with black on there. I used a foam roller to paint my roof. It lays the paint on nice and smooth.

Re: Painting Roof...suggestions?

Ceramic additives definately make a difference. I had my bus parked at the bus garage this past summer- the mechanics had everybody walk through my bus so they could feel the difference in temperature between my bus and the other buses there. The transportation supervisor was even kicking around the idea of painting the roofs of all the buses with it.

You don't need to use the expensive stuff from HyTech. Go to [url]http://uscomposites.com/fillers.html part #FL-3M025 3M glass bubbles. $6.25 for 2 1/2 quarts which is more than enough for the roof. Just add it to your paint of choice and you can't go wrong! I can't remember the ratio but I think it was something like 5 cups (by volume) per gallon. It was pretty thick- I just rolled it on.
