Problems with Ford (Lucas?) brakes?

I'm STILL shopping for a bus, and while snooping around I've been told several times to avoid Ford buses like the plague due to the Lucas brake systems these chassis' have. This is very unfortunate because around here a '90 Ford diesel bus can be had for almost nothing, and in decent shape too since local laws dictate that a school bus must be retired after it becomes 14 years old. ANYWAY, what's the deal with these brakes, you'd think that drum brakes would be cheaper and more reliable than disk? Any advice?
Sometimes it's better to remain silent and let everyone THINK you're an idiot, than to speak and remove all doubt.
