Purchasing Brand New Cushions--Is this Ideal?

When I owned a sailboat, the V-berth had super stiff 5-inch thick cushions that were awful. So I purchased a 4-inch thick memory foam topper from Foam Store of Marin, cut it to shape with a turkey carver, and absolutely LOVED it.


Well, now it's time for cushions on my bus, and I did the same thing--only the 4-inch thick memory foam (4.5 lbs. density) was on top of the plywood seats. And it was AWFUL.


Come to find out, you need to put the memory foam on top of firmer foam, which is why it worked out so great on the boat but not the bus.


So I consulted with the same company, explained what it was for, and here's what they said:

I would suggest the Everflex V44 at 3in with a 1in Memory Foam. This would make it quite comfortable for sitting and sleeping without it being too soft or stiff for either activity.

So my questions are: is this inline with what you've experienced? Should I get batting as well? Should I go for a five inch thickness for extra comfort, or is that not worth it? Are there any other things with custom cushions that I should know about before I pull the trigger?

Well, I for one am interested to know where you landed on this. With 100 views and no response yet, I think you might be the leading expert on this! hahaha I know I had no idea how custom cushions were made. I like your idea of adding extra batting and extra cushion. Please keep us informed with the results!

Aha, I never see that since I usually just look at the recent threads list in the sidebar. Damn, my build thread has 26,000 views - I wonder how many people I've saved from buying a rusted-out POS bus? And how many I've scared away from skoolies entirely.

Go to a specific forum (we'll use 'School Bus Conversions' as an example), then find the pertinent thread (we'll use 'Rusty 87 Build' as an example). Look out to the right....you'll see # of replies and 29000 views.

If the 'V44' is referring to the ILD, then it will sit about the same as any institutional or business (hospital, bank, etc) 'lounge' type seating you've used.....45ILD is pretty standard. I'd go with the recommendation above....more thickness doesn't translate to more comfort.....you won't compress 45ild a full 3" unless you weigh about 700 lbs.

Wow ... so this is where you originally wrote this post. I saw it first in your "Rusty 86 build" thread ... banman had quoted it! I searched all through that thread and could not find it. To make matters worse, it is at the top of a page so I thought I skipped a page or something. So funny!

This is probably a BS story like everything, but it sounds cool:

Chumley's, a famous and OLD New York speakeasy, is located at 86 Bedford St. During Prohibition, an entrance through an interior adjoining courtyard was used, as it provided privacy and discretion for customers.

As was (and is) a New York tradition, the cops were on the payroll of the bar and would give a ring to the bar that they were coming for a raid. Even if you have a bugout bus ... where would you go? reading on the Coronavirus Thread, it seems even the BLM lands are being closed in some areas.

Well, I will say that having the two densities as one piece is desirable. Two separate pieces and they can go in different directions. Can anyone tell me why my sheets and blanket slide to opposite sides of the bed?
