re: 8d battery help please!

I recently aquired a few lightly used comercial 8D batteries and plan on using them, assuming they work well, as house batteries. The plan was to pick up 4 golf cart batteries, however this option provides me with about 650 amps for free. So... plans are a changin.

Questions:

1 - My "smart" charger needs to be told what type of battery it is charging. I chose regular. Is this correct?

2 - Is using the 8D's just a headache waiting to happen in regards to house batteries?

3 - What should the resting voltage and amperage charge rate be? I read that voltage should be 12.65 and amperage 12.8-13.1 however the amperage number does not seem correct to me. Any thoughts?

Thanks all!

-Richard

If they are good batteries, and are free, I would certianly use them.

The 8D is a very stout battery, weighing in excess of 130 pounds with 168 lead plates. (according to an interstate battery website)

More lead = more heavy duty

They are not labeled as deep cycle batteries but i would be willing to guess that they will work just fine in that role.

With any batteries, not discharging the batteries past the halfway point is key to their long life.
