Rivnuts on the roof. Which Loctite? Red or Blue?

Hello Everyone,

I am bolting my solar racking to the roof using 3/8" rivnuts and SS bolts.

I want to loctite them to keep the bolts secure but am not sure which Loctite would be best.

The blue will break loose with a wrench. The red is much tougher. If the Blue is secure enough then I am fine with that. If it is not strong enough I can use the Red but it will be fairly permanent.

What do you all suggest?



BTW: I am using closed end Rivnuts and bedding them in 3M-5200. The finished assembly will be covered with self leveling roof sealer. Water should not be an issue.

Red is permanent. Blue is removable. I’d go blue with a lockwasher.

All the hardware I’ve ever received that has preapplied locktite has been blue

All locktite bonds (except their way special high heat jet engine stuff) are chemically broken at 400°F . I like to use a pencil torch for small bolts.

I would hesitate to use Loctite on a rivnut if you ever want to take it apart. They really don't grip tight enough to resist turning if the bolt comes out hard. I've seen too many turn that had nothing on them.

If you are using stainless bolts for cosmetic or corrosion reasons, that's one thing. Unless you buy really expensive ones stainless bolts are about grade 5 in strength.

The bolts will be exposed on the roof. It is more about corrosion protection than anything else.
