Roll up Door??

Anyone ever try putting a roll up door on the back of a Bus??

I considered the idea for my future toyhauler, but decided against it because I'd rather have the back door fold upwards to double as an awning. But I don't see why a rollup door wouldn't work.

I would think the required headroom for a rollup door would be a major problem.

Thinking more of the commercial metal kind that rolls up. Not the garage door style with tracks..

Commercial applications such as Semis and U-Haul trucks have flat roofs. A typical school bus roof is curved, so to make it work without eating up precious head room would require a roof raise, or if not, some serious roof mods.

99% of commercial rollup doors have the "roll" to the interior. You still need about 18" or so headroom inside or outside. The fire-rated door looks expensive.

I have access to 3 different sized units (12, 6 & 4 ft wide) used. I may just replace the panels on the back of the bus, the doors new, the right side is toast.
Wanted some feedback & thoughts about it...
I own a Portable Paintball business (www.madfrogpaintball.net) the bus is replacing our 24ft trailer & the back is the storage/garage area. The door will work but I'm looking for options...

No reason why it should not work. My dad put one in the side of his small garden shed that was only about 6 or so feet high, . I could check with him where he got it. very light weight.

.. check out the ones used on rescue vehicles/firetrucks (can be pricey) .. fair warning though, they are not insulated nor weather-proof/water tight in most cases .. not sure if other commercial units are either .. good thoughts though ..

Those style doors would be anchored to a building... how much pounding would they take bouncing up and down the road?


Chasgoat: How long is your ramp, does it go up to the curve in the roof or below the lights?....or did you drop the floor or raise the roof? how much of a pitch is the ramp?

I can't take credit for the conversion, but I did rebuild it to withstand higher loads. My back door is 7 1/2' x 7 1/2". It uses 2 3" hydraulic pistons bolted underneath the dovetail. Requires no power or hydraulics to open, but needs engine and pump running to close.
