both of my skoolies are only about 9 feet tall measured from the ground to the center of the roof. 13'6" is the legal limit, so there is a lot of room to play with

Overhead obstructions on secondary roads can be much lower. There was a steel bridge that I used to cross that had an 11 foot clearance. Also, if you plan to do any backcountry driving on forest service roads, you have to worry about tree limbs.

I really want to have a deck on my bus someday, but increasing the height is a drawback to keeps me from building one.

...that and the fact that I don't have the money, time, or tools to do it....

Hmmm....

One thing I was thinking about doing with my (future) deck and my (future) solar panels is mounting the panels under the deck on adjustable arms that would swing out to the sides of the bus...or mounting them under the deck and having hatches in the deck over them that I could lift up.

Some day...
