School busses cut with torch and sold as scrap Texas
this is sad, i wonder why they are doing this in Texas. i noticed they are all Crown busses, could that be the reason?

Re: School busses cut with torch and sold as scrap Texas
It's not because of the make, here 5 months ago scrap was $12.50 a 100lbs and the bus districts where making more money by scrapping them out than selling them(made finding a bus a real bitch)
also where does a school district store 50 buses to make room for new ones? after 15 years they werent ready to dispose of them all at once(had to get most out of them)
Once sold as scrap they have to be made into "scrap" very similar to the gov. program for cars.
This way they can't be titled
It is sad because it drove the price of buses from $2500 to $5000+ in less than 6 months.
Since scrap went back down to $9.00 a 100# bus prices are comiong back down

Re: School busses cut with torch and sold as scrap Texas
actually, i have bought vehicles that were only for scrap and had them titled in another state...as far as i know as of last year, other people are doing this right now.
When doing this to make some money, one has to consider all the expenses.

Did Carpenter change it's name to Crown? If they did, I bet they did it for liability reasons. If not, it might have something to do with emissions and grant money.

if all there is cut on the engine is that small hole in the block... it can be repaired, as well as the frame..

That is indeed a strange thing that NO UPS trucks get sold. Did you ever notice that there are no manufacturer's names on their trucks. I have asked many UPS drivers what kind of truck they are driving. They don't even know.

Re: School busses cut with torch and sold as scrap Texas
They are all made by Grumman the body not drivetrain and they use different powerplants.........
A friend of mine was a UPS man, 30+ys, says they will fix em until the metal is gone! then they crush em! thats it end of the road!
He says the new freightliners are junk, he had one of those on his rural route. He had the larger truck in the city, never had a problem. other than a big wind gust tipped him over once.
On a side note, I saw a newer FED-EX truck half parked in this guys garage who drives for FED-Ex, jacked up with the hood open and the tires off.
Couldn't figure out for the life of me what he was doing to it. Found out Fedex drivers have to buy and service their own trucks. Contracted to Fedex starting pay around $64,000 per yr.
