Should 9-pin data port have 2 pins missing?

Getting ready to pull the trigger on a Bluefire and/or Scan Gauge.
Our bus appears to have a 9-pin connector, but 2 of the pins are missing.
Any issues I should be concerned with? Why are these pins missing?

For reference, a pic. Not from our bus but this is what ours looks like. Note the two missing pins in 3-o-clock & 5-o-clock positions.

Guess I'll answer my own question that I should have answered myself before asking ...

Looks like those are "OEM-specific" optional pins.

FWIW... Ordered a bluefire adapter 15 minutes ago. 5 minutes ago they emailed me telling me it was shipping today. If the product's anything like the service I anticipate being very happy.

they are pins D and C.. is this an older bus with a J1708 engine? (cummins 24 valve, T444E,DT466E) and a non electronic transmission? or old MD3060?

D and C are J1939 data pins... J1939 is used on WTEC-III ( mid 98 3060's and on allison 1000 / 2000 series transmissions. . and on the later engines (Maxxforce and later CAT)..

2003 t444e, allison 2000.

I need to look & see what pins they are for sure. I just assumed they were the same in the pic I hijacked above (from another poster here), but I can't say for sure at the moment.

yeah look at how the Notch is pointed.. then you can match them up.. the one pictured looks like a 98.5-up international that had an AT545 / MT643 (or stick) trans.. they started using the 9 pin connectors then as the WTEC-III MD3060 and then in late 00 the allison 1000 / 2000 came along.. all of those transmissions use J1939 but the engine is still J1708. the old 6 pin connector only handled J1708, the 9 pin Spec handles both J1939 and J1708 in one connector.. the 2 pins I would GUESS are missing would be H and J which one of them is a euro-standard K-line (used by webasto on some of their models) and like you say OEM specific.

the 9 pin Bluefire is capable of both protocols so you can pick and choose what you want it to grab data from. the bluefire software lacks a bit on transmission stuff ( you can get the android or windows source and add your own parameters.. ive done it and it isnt too hard if you can write code.)

Just wanted to add that i had the same conundrom. I have only 4/9 pins which means i only have J1708 pins. Whats weird is i still get transmission data from the WTEC 3.
